Optimized flash file system targets Android and Linux

Tuxera released Tuxera Flash File System for Linux and Android, which is optimized to run on flash storages such as eMMC and SD.

Modern mobile apps, “which download and write data around the clock,” can be punishing on flash storage, says Tuxera Inc. When you combine always-on operation with simultaneous access by multiple apps, flash storage can wear out in a hurry, says to the company.

To prepare flash memory for these changing usage patterns, Tuxera has developed a Tuxera Flash File System specifically for Linux and Android based devices. The file system is based on its existing “robust” file system technologies with special flash optimization and extended features, says the company. Other Tuxera products for Linux and Android have included the Tuxera FAT file system, which was claimed to speed data transfers while supporting fail-safe operation.

The new Tuxera Flash File System reduces “Write Amplification,” offers wear-leveling features, and prevents file system fragmentation on-the-“fly without performance compromises,” says Tuxera. The technology supports fast boot and mount times, while guaranteeing data and device integrity during storage removal and unexpected power-off, says the company. On-the-fly check and repair tools are said to ensure that the system automatically heals itself while running.

The Tuxera Flash File System supports Android and Linux, including variants such as Tizen, Firefox OS, and Chrome OS. The technology supports ARM and x86 on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions, as well as MIPS, PowerPC, and other platforms. Supported storage formats include eMMC, eSD, SD Card, CF Card, SSD, USB, and SATA.

In addition to supporting mobile applications, the technology is particularly well suited to automotive applications, says Tuxera. “Durability is especially important in automotive market, where the system is expected to last over 15 years,” stated Szabolcs Szakacsits, Tuxera President and CTO. “That’s why Tuxera file systems already power eMMC and eSD storages in the latest automotive and mobile deployments.”
