SBC offers Bay Trail CPUs, three video outputs, dual GbE

Sep 24, 2015 — by Rick Lehrbaum 1,243 views

Aaeon has added a new Bay Trail model to its 3.5-inch form factor SBC line, featuring three display outputs, dual GbE, dual Mini-PCIe, and soldered-on RAM.

Aaeon’s Linux ready “GENE-BT06” SBC joins its growing 3.5-inch single-board computer family, which includes the similarly Intel Bay Trail-based GENE-BT05, as well as the soon-to-ship, Braswell-based GENE-BSW5.

By now, the 22nm Bay Trail Atom and Celeron processors that Intel rolled out in Q4 of 2013 have become pervasive on single-board computers and computer-on-modules targeting embedded and industrial applications. For example, Bay Trail-based 3.5-inch form-factor SBCs we’ve covered include ADL’s ADLE3800HD, Axiomtek’s CAPA840 and CAPA841, Nexcom’s EBC 355, and the WinSystems SBC35-CC405, and we’ve written up numerous examples of Bay Trail-based COMs. The processors designed into these SBCs and COMs are typically taken from Intel’s “embedded roadmap” that promises long lifecycle and extended temperature operation, with the result that two years down the road we’re still seeing new Bay Trail-based SBCs and COMs hitting the market.

Aaeon’s GENE-BT06 SBC implements a fairly typical set of features for 3.5-inch SBCs. The board supports the Intel 22nm Bay Trail quad-core, 1.9GHz E3845 and dual-core 1.33GHz E3825 Atom processors, as well as an unspecified Celeron part, and equips the processor with up with either 2GB or 4GB of soldered-on DDR3L SDRAM memory, depending on model.

The SBC provides three display outputs — VGA, dual-channel 18/24-bit LVDs, and HDMI — which support resolutions up to 1920 x 1200 pixels. An option for a 4/5/8-wire resistive touchscreen controller should prove useful for building HMI subsystems or panel-PCs around the board. As indicated on the coastline connector diagram (above), the HDMI port is only included on an “Advanced” version of the SBC.

The GENE-BT06 also offers a 3Gb/s SATA mass storage interface, two gigabit Ethernet ports, as well as multiple USB and COM ports along with 8-bits of GPIO. For modular expansion, there is a pair of mini-PCIe slots; one is full-sized, and the other is half-sized and supports both PCIe and mSATA.
