Rugged module pumps up Skylake Core and Xeon E3 chips

Dec 16, 2016 — by Eric Brown 905 views

Axiomtek has upgraded its “CEM500” COM Express Basic Type 6 module with Skylake Core and Xeon E3 CPUs with up to 32GB DDR4 and -40 to 85°C support.

Axiomtek is upgrading its CEM500 COM Express Basic Type 6 module with 6th Generation Intel Skylake processors. The original CEM500 escaped our attention when it was announced in July without support for the Intel Xeon E3 and its associated Intel CM236 chipset. Around the same time, we did cover Axiomtek’s smaller Compact Type 6 CEM501 which integrates Intel’s dual-core 15W TDP, U-series Skylake Core CPUs. By contrast, the larger, 125 x 95mm CEM500 goes high-end with support for Skylake Core EQ and Xeon E3 processors with 25W or 45W TDPs.

The CEM500 supports the Xeon E3-1505M v5 (45W) Core i7-6820EQ (45W), i7-6822EQ (25W), i5-6440EQ (45W), and i3-6100E (35W). More information on these processors can be found in our coverage of the Congatec Conga-TS170 and Seco COMe-B09-BT6, two other COM Express Basic modules that tapped the same processors. Available chipsets on the CEM500 include the Intel QM170 and HM170 in addition to the CM236. No OS support was listed, but Linux should run just fine.

The CEM500 can load up to 32GB of DDR4-2133 via dual SODIMMs, with optional ECC. The module offers 4 x SATA-600 interfaces with RAID 0/1/5/10 support and a GbE controller with WoL and PXE.

Triple display support is provided with 3x DDI channels (HDMI/DisplayPort/DVI), one of which can be replaced with VGA, and there’s also a dual-channel LVDS interface that can be swapped out for eDP. The module is further equipped with 4x USB 3.0, 8x USB 2.0, and 2x serial interfaces. You also get HD audio, LPC, SPI, I2C, SMBus, and 4-channel DIO.

The CEM500 offers both a PCIe x16 3.0 interface and 8x PCIe x1 connections. A watchdog and hardware monitoring are also available, along with AMT 11.0 and TPM security. The board also supports Axiomtek’s remote management AXView 2.0 software.

The CEM500 is furnished with an AT 12V input, as well as ATX 12V and 5V inputs. The module supports temperatures of -40 to 85°C, and a heatsink and heatspreader are optional.

Like the CEM501, the Haswell-based CEM880, and earlier Bay Trail Atom based CEM842 and CEM843 COM Express Compact Type 6 modules, the CEM500 works with Axiomtek’s CEB94006 baseboard. The CEB94006 offers features like four USB 3.0 ports, two USB 2.0 ports, five video ports, and a Port 80 display for debugging.
