Eurotech’s rugged, IP40 protected “ReliaGate 20-26” IoT gateway runs Red Hat Linux on a Bay Trail Atom, and has cellular, GPS, WiFi, and Bluetooth options.

Eurotech’s ReliaGate 20-26 is the latest in a line of Internet of Things gateways, such as the ReliaGate 10-11, based on a TI AM3352 Sitara SoC, and the Intel Atom Z510-based ReliaGate 50-21. For the ReliaGate 20-26, Eurotech advances to a more modern “Bay Trail” Atom E3800.

This latest IoT gateway runs Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7 rather than the Yocto Project based Linux distribution on the ReliaGate 10-11, or the ReliaGate 50-21’s Wind River Linux. Eurotech announced the ReliaGate 20-26 at this week’s Red Hat Summit in San Francisco where the company joined with Red Hat to also announce a new open source Eclipse Foundation project. The new Project Kapua is based on Eurotech’s Everywhere Cloud IoT platform code (see farther below).

The ReliaGate 20-26 is available with 2GB or 4GB of 1333MHz DDR3L ECC RAM depending on whether you use the single-core 1.46GHz Atom E3815 or 1.75GHz dual-core Atom E3827 (both with 2GB) or the 1.91GHz quad-core Atom E3845. All three configurations give you 8GB eMMC and a microSD slot.

Two GbE ports are available along with a USB 3.0 port and two USB 2.0 ports. Like the USB 3.0 port, one of the two 2.0 ports are noise and surge protected, while the other is designed for Eurotech’s line of ReliaCell wireless modules. Cellular and GPS ReliaCell 10-20 modules are available, and either can be installed internally as a factory option. A user-accessible micro-SIM is also available. If you go with the mini-PCIe-based 802/11b/g/n plus Bluetooth 4.0 BLE module option, you only get two free mini-PCIe slots instead of three.

The ReliaGate 20-26 is further equipped with a mini-DisplayPort, a CANBus 2.0b connection (100mA with 5V power out), plus dual protected RS-232/RS-422/RS-485 ports and an RS-232 serial console. Other features include isolated and protected DIO (3x in, 3x out), plus a watchdog, RTC, temperature and accelerometer sensors, reset and user buttons, and programmable LEDs.

The 192 x 131 x 52mm, 1.3-Kilogram aluminum box has IP40 ingress protection, and supports operating temperatures of -40 to 75°C. The ReliaGate 20-26 a has a 7-35VDC (nominal 12V) power input with support for vehicle ignition input, and has 7W, 10W, or 12W idle power consumption depending on the Atom selected. Wall, DIN-Rail, or general purpose mounting brackets are available.

In addition to offering RHEL 7, the ReliaGate 20-26 is supported with an SDK that includes Red Hat JBoss Developer Studio and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Developer Suite. You also get the Red Hat JBoss Fuse integration platform and JBoss BRMS for rules management. All this is integrated with the Java/OSGi-based Everyware Software Framework (ESF) for IoT remote management, data filtering, and aggregation features.

 
Eclipse Kapua

Eurotech’s commercial ESF IoT middleware framework was previously released as an open source Eclipse Kura platform. Now Eurotech and Red Hat have joined together to release the related Everyware Cloud platform as an Eclipse Kapua project, once again hosted by the Eclipse Foundation.

The underlying Everywhere Cloud technology “provides an easy path to connect cloud-ready devices to IT systems and/or applications,” says Eurotech. Both Eurotech and Red Hat plan to participate actively in Kapua and Kura, “developing and testing code, collaborating with other contributors, and integrating existing open source projects that are integral to IoT solutions (e.g. Apache Camel, ActiveMQ, Drools, etc.),” say the companies.
