Seeed Studio has reintroduced its 2022-era XIAO ESP32S3 Sense as part of a new educational kit bundled with accessories and the open-access textbook Machine Learning Systems: Design and Implementation, developed by Prof. Vijay Janapa Reddi and contributors from Harvard and the open-source community.

The XIAO ESP32S3 Sense is a compact board based on Espressif’s ESP32-S3 microcontroller, featuring a dual-core Xtensa LX7 processor with integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth LE. It includes a 2MP OV3660 camera and an onboard digital microphone, allowing it to capture both image and audio data for lightweight machine learning and sensing tasks.

The board also integrates 8MB of PSRAM and 8MB of flash, and its 21 × 17.8 mm form factor provides standard GPIOs and USB-C connectivity.

The new kit, called the XIAOML Kit, expands the board’s functionality with an IMU breakout board that includes a 6-axis LSM6DS3TR-C IMU, a 0.42-inch OLED display, and a 200 mAh Li-ion battery. The breakout connects to the XIAO board via I²C and interrupt lines and adds extra headers for easier prototyping.

Accessories include a 32GB SanDisk microSD card, a USB card reader, USB-C adapters, and small aluminum heatsinks. The XIAOML Kit is priced at $38.90.

The included textbook supports the kit through hands-on XIAO Labs, which guide users through tasks such as installing the Arduino IDE, testing the onboard microphone and camera, using the OLED display, connecting to Wi-Fi, and working with the IMU sensor. It also includes examples using SenseCraft AI Studio and demonstrates how to build a simple web server to control the onboard LED.

Users who prefer other platforms can follow alternative versions of the labs designed for the Arduino Nicla Vision and Raspberry Pi boards, including the Raspberry Pi Zero 2-W and Raspberry Pi 5 with a connected camera.

In addition to the hardware labs, the book spans five major parts. Part I lays the groundwork with chapters on ML systems, deep learning, and network architectures. Part II covers AI workflows, data engineering, training, and frameworks.

Part III explores performance aspects such as efficient AI, model optimization, acceleration, and benchmarking—including on-device learning. Part IV focuses on robustness, security, and privacy. Part V addresses responsible AI, sustainability, and ethical deployment.
