World’s first Zynq UltraScale+ based SMARC module runs Linux

MSC’s rugged “MSC SM2S-ZUSP” SMARC module features a Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC with 4x Cortex-A53, 2x Cortex-R5, GPU, and FPGA plus up to 8GB DDR4 and 64GB eMMC and optional WiFi/BT and carrier.

MSC Technologies — a brand of Avnet Integrated Solutions — has launched the world’s first SMARC 2.0 form-factor module with Xilinx’s Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC. The 82 x 50mm SMARC “Short” style MSC SM2S-ZUSP joins other Zynq UltraScale+ based modules such as iWave’s iW-RainboW-G30M, Enclustra‘s Mars XU3 and Mercury+ XU1, Trenz’s TE0808 UltraSOM+, and Iveia’s Atlas-II-Z8 and Atlas-III-Z8 COMs. SBCs include Avnet’s 96Boards compatible Ultra96.

The Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC offers 4x (UltraScale+ EV) or 2x (UltraScale+ CG)
1.5GHz or 1.3GHz Cortex-A53 cores, respectively. You also get a Mali-400 MP2 GPU and 2x 600MHz (EV) or 533MHz (CG) Cortex-R5 MCUs with vector FPUs and memory protection units for improved real-time processing.

On the MSC SM2S-ZUSP, you can choose between the ZU2EG, ZU3EG, ZU4EG, ZU5EG, ZU4EV and ZU5EV FPGAs on the EV model or ZU2CG, ZU3CG, ZU4CG, and ZU5CG FPGAs on the CG. These are all on the low- to mid-range of the UltraScale+ FPGA family.


With its soldered RAM and optional -40 to 85°C range (0 to 70°C standard), the MSC SM2S-ZUSP module is suitable for rugged 5G wireless systems, Internet of Things, industrial automation, robotics, medical technology, and transportation, says MSC. A Linux BSP is standard and Android is available on request.

You can load up to 8GB DDR4-2400 with optional ECC plus an optional allotment of similarly soldered 2GB DDR4-2133 for the FPGA programmable logic. Some QSPI NOR flash is available for booting.

Up to 64GB eMMC flash is available on the module, and SATA III and MMC/SD/SDIO are available on the optional carrier board (see farther below). LAN and wireless features are optional. These include on-module 802.11ac/a/b/g/n and Bluetooth/BLE and up to 2x Gigabit Ethernet controllers.

MSC SM2S-ZUSP display interfaces include dual-channel 18/24-bit LVDS and DisplayPort 1.2a for up to 4096 x 2160 @ 30Hz. There’s only a single DP lane for the ZU2/3 models and 2x lanes for the others. Audio and 2x MIPI-CSI-2 are both optional and “dependent on implementation in Programmable Logic,” says MSC.

The module supports 1x USB 3.0/2.0 host, 2x USB 2.0 host, and 1x USB 2.0 host/client ports. An optional SKU removes one of the USB 2.0 host interfaces. Dual UARTs are available (one with 2-wire handshake), as well as 3x I2C, 2x SPI, 12x Arm-linked GPIO (configurable as input or output), and an optional bank of 60x FPGA I/O.

On ZU2/3 models, you’re limited to a single, 5Gbps PCIe Gen2 expansion interface while the others offer 2x 8Gbps PCIe Gen3. The 5V module consumes between 5-15W. A heatspreader, heatsink, and two debug adapters are optional.

The MSC SM2S-ZUSP is available with the same optional, Mini-ITX form-factor MSC SM2-MB-EP1 carrier board that accompanies the recent, i.MX8-based MSC SM2S-IMX8 SMARC module. Coastline ports include 2x GbE, 2x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0, and a micro-USB 2.0 OTG. There’s also an SD slot, DisplayPort, HDMI port, 3x audio jacks, and RS232 and CAN 2.0B ports, among other I/O. A starter kit version with heatspreader, power supply, cable kit, and SD card is also on the menu.
