Wide-temperature SBCs tap quad-core Atom E3800 SoCs

Aug 20, 2014 — by Eric Brown 1,376 views

Commell’s three extended-temperature SBCs deliver Intel’s quad-core Atom E3800 and Celeron SoCs on Mini-ITX, Pico-ITX, and 3.5-inch form-factors.

It’s taken awhile for Commell to get around to the 22nm Intel Atom E3800 family of system-on-chips, but it’s making up for lost time by announcing three Atom-based single board computers at once. No OS support was listed for the LV-67O (Mini-ITX @ 170 x 170mm), LP-173 (Pico-ITX @ 100 x 72mm) and LE-37D (3.5-inch @ 146 x 101mm) SBCs, but Linux should run just fine on all three.

Commell, also known as Taiwan Commate Computer, recommends all three boards for digital signage, medical equipment, point-of-sale, gaming machines, and industrial control systems. They are all available in standard 0 to 60°C and extended temperature, -40 to 75°C versions. They all include a watchdog timer, a real-time clock, ACPI 5.0 power management, and Realtek ALC26 HD audio, and all three can run from wide range input power sources.

The default processor is the quad-core, 1.91GHz Atom E3845 with a 2MB cache and 10W TDP, but Intel’s slower, more power-efficient Atom E3800 models are likely supported as well. All three boards support two similarly 22nm, quad-core Celeron processors: the 2.0GHz, 10W J1900 and the 1.83GHz, 7.5W N2930.

All the SBCs feature Intel Clear Video HD graphics. They all let you load up to 8GB of DDR3L RAM, and support dual displays, although the video ports differ slightly.

LV-67O (Mini-ITX)

The LV-67O industrial motherboard has the usual 170 x 170mm Mini-ITX dimensions, and runs on a standard 24-pin ATX supply, or alternatively from a variable 6 to 27V DC input source. Other Commell Mini-ITX boards include the 4th Gen Intel Core based LV-67M.

Video ports include DVI and DisplayPort on the coastline, as well as a VGA interface and two dual-channel LVDS interfaces. Alternative versions are available, however, that appear to subtract the coastline DVI and DP ports.

Other coastline ports include dual gigabit Ethernet ports, a PS/2 port, multiple audio jacks, an RS232/422/485 port, and one of the five available RS232 ports. You get one USB 3.0 and three USB 2.0 ports on the coastline, with two more USB 2.0 interfaces available internally.

Onboard connectors provide 8-bit GPIO, a second audio connector, SMBus, and LPC interfaces. You also get a PCI-Express (PCIe) x16 slot, and a mini-PCIe slot that also supports mSATA cards. Dual SATA II interfaces are included, one of which can be optionally swapped out for a CFast slot.

LP-173 (Pico-ITX)

The LP-173 is implemented on the 100 x 72mm Pico-ITX form-factor, and can run from a wide-range, 6 to 27V DC power source.

Video features include a coastline DVI port, and onboard VGA and 24-bit, dual-channel LVDS interfaces. Other coastline ports include a single gigabit Ethernet port, a USB 3.0 port, and one of the three available USB 2.0 ports.

Onboard interfaces include PS/2, SATA II, LPC, GPIO, and an audio connector. There are also dual RS232 interfaces, and a mini-PCIe slot that can be swapped out for mSATA.

LE-37D (3.5-inch)

Like the LV-67O Mini-ITX board the LE-37D appears to offer separate SKUs that remove the DisplayPort and DVI coastline ports in favor of the onboard dual-channel LVDS and VGA connectors. The DVI port uses an HDMI connector.

The LE-37D is built on a 3.5-inch SBC form-factor, which in this case measures 146 x 101mm. The board can operate from a variable 6 to 27V DC input power source.

Additional coastline ports include dual gigabit Ethernet ports, one USB 3.0 port, and one of the five available USB 2.0 ports. There are also five RS232 ports, one of which is a real-world coastline port. An RS232/422/485 connector is available internally.

Other onboard connectors provide SATA II, GPIO, audio, SMBus, and LPC. A CFast socket is provided, along with a mini-PCIe slot with mSATA support.
