USB Insight Hub for Advanced USB Monitoring and Control

Oct 31, 2024 — by Giorgio Mendoza 371 views

CrowdSupply recently launched the USB Insight Hub, a tool designed to provide detailed monitoring and control over multiple USB devices. Built for developers and tech enthusiasts, this hub offers a range of monitoring features, allowing users to view power and data usage in depth.

The hub features a Renesas uPD720210 USB 3.0 controller, supporting both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 standards, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of devices. An ESP32-S2 microcontroller manages display and control functions, while an STM8S003K3 microcontroller extends input and output capabilities.

Each downstream port’s power and energy monitoring is handled by a PAC1943 module, providing accurate current and voltage readings with a resolution of 1 mA and 1 mV. Power control for each port is managed by an AP22653 switch, which offers configurable hardware current protection and software-based overcurrent and reverse current protection.

Control over power and data for each port is achieved through mechanical push buttons, providing tactile feedback for independent power toggling and data line control. For example, pressing and holding a button toggles the D+/D- data lines on USB 2 while USB 3.0 lines remain active.

This setup allows users to perform tasks like forcing device re-enumeration without disconnecting power or measuring power consumption without active USB communication. Additionally, the hub includes a global power button, which can stagger power-up across connected devices, reducing the initial power draw and supporting stable device enumeration.

The USB Type-C connectors offer reliable connectivity and enhanced power delivery, with two upstream USB Type-C ports. One port, labeled DATA/PWR, provides both data and power, while the AUX PWR port allows for additional power input, reaching a combined power of up to 5 A. Special eFuses in the hub merge power sources from the host and external supplies, providing stable power with over-voltage, under-voltage, and inrush current protections.

Each port is equipped with JST connectors compatible with STEMMA QT, enabling integration of sensors and actuators over I²C. Additionally, the downstream USB 3.0 Type-A ports are spaced 32 mm apart, accommodating larger devices without crowding.

The user interface is designed for readability, featuring three 1.3″ TFT color displays with a 170° viewing angle and adjustable orientation. The hub’s construction uses a layered design with two PCBs connected by a flexible cable, secured by four standoffs within an acrylic enclosure, providing protection for the displays while maintaining accessibility.

The USB Insight Hub is compatible with Windows, Linux, and macOS, with USB drivers for seamless integration. Property extraction software is available for Windows, with support for Linux and macOS in development. As an open-hardware product, Aerio Solutions SAS, the company behind the development of the USB Insight Hub, also offers schematics and firmware on GitHub.

Further information

The USB Insight Hub is available for $119 on the CrowdSupply website, with orders placed now expected to ship in July 2025.
