(Updated) DFRobot Previews RISC-V-Based FireBeetle 2 with ESP32-P4, Targeting Image and Video Applications

The FireBeetle 2 ESP32-P4 is an upcoming compact development board designed for real-time image processing, video streaming, and wireless communication. It targets HMI applications such as digital photo frames, security systems, home control panels, and smart doorbells.

The board is built around the ESP32-P4R32 microcontroller, which features a dual-core 400 MHz RISC-V processor for high-performance tasks and a 40 MHz single-core RISC-V processor for low-power operation.

It supports single-precision floating-point operations and AI extensions, making it capable of handling computationally demanding workloads. Memory resources include 32MB of PSRAM, 16MB of Flash, 768KB of L2 memory, and dedicated SRAM and ROM segments for both high-performance and low-power execution.

Designed with multimedia applications in mind, the board includes a MIPI-DSI interface for image and video output, compatible with Raspberry Pi display modules, and a MIPI-CSI interface for camera modules. Built-in hardware acceleration includes a JPEG decoder and encoder, a pixel processing unit, and an H264 encoder. These components enable handling of image and video data, supporting playback and capture at up to 1080p@30fps or 720p@88fps.

Wireless connectivity is enabled through the ESP32-C6 module, similar to the recently covered ESP32-P4-based Waveshare board, providing Wi-Fi and Bluetooth communication via SDIO.

Wi-Fi support includes IEEE 802.11b/g/n/ax protocols, while Bluetooth 5 is supported with multiple PHY data rates. For high-speed data exchange with USB devices, the board includes a USB OTG 2.0 Type-C interface with theoretical speeds up to 480 Mbps.

The development board also provides extensive peripheral support. Interfaces include UART, SPI, I2C, I2S, PWM, ADC, and infrared transmit/receive channels. A PDM microphone is available for audio capture and voice features, and a MicroSD card slot allows for onboard storage of images, videos, or logs. Despite measuring only 25.4mm by 60mm, the board offers 24 digital I/O pins and supports touch input and LED control.

On the software side, the FireBeetle 2 ESP32-P4 is supported by the Arduino IDE, with a DFRobot wiki available for setup and troubleshooting.

DFRobot hasn’t mentioned when is the FireBeetle 2 ESP32-P4 be available or what’s the price. For more information refer to their Wiki page and the LittleBirdElectronics online store.

(Update 6/12/2025): A product page for the FireBeetle 2 ESP32-P4 is now available on DFRobot, listing the price at $14.50. Although the device has not been officially launched yet, the page offers an option to sign up for availability notifications.
