Ugoos reveals Cortex-A5 Android 4.4 TV dongle
Aug 4, 2014 — by Eric Brown 1,989 viewsUgoos is prepping an Android 4.4 “S85” media player dongle with a quad-core Amlogic S805 Cortex-A5 SoC clocked to 1.5GHz, and a quad-core Mali-450 GPU.
Ugoos has spun a variety of Android media player boxes and dongles over the last few years, including a UT3 box, featuring Rockchip’s quad-core, Cortex-A17 RK3288 system-on-chip with a 16-core Mali-T760 GPU, now selling for $130. Before that was the Ugoos UT2, with the quad-core, Cortex-A9 RK3188 SoC clocked to 1.6GHz, with a Mali-400 GPU. Last year, the Chinese company introduced a dongle-style UM2 stick, running on the same RK3188 and Mali-400 GPU.

The “coming soon” Ugoos S85 Android TV Dongle was announced without a price or a photo of the final enclosed product. It will no doubt sell for less than $100, and considering the dongle form-factor and limited I/O, may well fall under $60. The UM2 stick computer is now selling for as little as $65.

The S85 runs Android 4.4 on an Amlogic S805, a quad-core, Cortex-A5 SoC clocked at 1.5GHz. The S805 SoC is the little sister to the Amlogic S802, a quad-core Cortex-A9 SoC that appeared in a recently announced W2Comp Probox2 EX media player.

Although the processor is slower than with the UT2 and UM2, the graphics are more impressive. Like the Amlogic S802, the S805 incorporates ARM’s quad-core Mali-450 GPU. This is more powerful than the Mali-400, but nowhere near the Mali-T760. All told, the S805 enables the Ugoos S85 to support HD video playback with H.265 video decoding, and 3D graphics acceleration.
The Ugloos S85 is further equipped with 1GB of DDR3 RAM, 8GB of flash, and SD card expansion. The dead-simple dongle provides built-in WiFi, a USB 2.0 port, and an HDMI 1.4b port, and not much else.
