Toughened up Apollo Lake box PC runs Linux

Mar 25, 2019 — by Eric Brown 448 views

Axiomtek’s rugged, Linux-friendly “eBOX625-312-FL” is an Apollo Lake embedded PC with 2x GbE, 4x USB 3.0, 2x mini-PCIe, 3x serial, lockable HDMI, and a SATA bay.

The eBOX625-312-FL is the typical, rugged industrial computer of our current era. There’s nothing particularly exciting about it, but assuming that it indeed offers “effective pricing,” this could be the workhorse you’re looking for.

The fanless, 200 x 120 x 46mm system is slightly larger than Axiomtek’s similar — and similarly Apollo Lake based — eBOX100-312-FL. The eBOX625-312-FL lacks the second HDMI port of the earlier model. However, it has more USB 3.0 ports and adds two more serial ports, dedicated mSATA, TPM 1.2, shock resistance, and a wide-range AC power supply, among other minor differences.

The eBOX625-312-FL runs Linux or Windows 10 IoT on Intel’s dual-core, 1.1GHz/2.4GHz Celeron N3350 or quad-core, up to 2.5GHz Pentium N4200. You can load up to 8GB of DDR3L-1866 RAM via a single slot.

There’s a 2.5-inch SATA bay and an mSATA socket, both with optional storage. mSATA is also available via one of the dual full-size mini-PCIe slots with USB/PCIe signaling. Four SMA antenna connectors and a SIM slot are onboard along with optional WiFi and 3G/LTE modules.

External ports include 4x USB 3.0, 2x USB 2.0, and 2x GbE ports. DB9 ports are provided for 2x RS-232/422/485 and a single RS-232. The lockable HDMI port provides 4K support, and there’s also a VGA port and audio in and out jacks.

The eBOX625-312-FL features a 12V DC input and a 90V to 264V AC power input with an optional 12V 60W adapter. There’s also a watchdog, a reset button, an ATX switch, a front-mounted AT/ATX switch, and OVP, UVP, and SCP power protections.

Other features include TPM 1.2 security, 2x LEDs, and wall, VESA, and DIN-rail mounting kits. Axiomtek’s AXView 2.0 software is also available.

The aluminum extrusion and steel enclosure is IP40-protected against ingress, and supports a -20 to 60°C or 65°C range with SSD, dependent on the power range. The box is protected against vibration at up to 3 Grms (5-500Hz) per IEC 60068-2-64 and absorbs shock per IEC 60068-2-27 (50G, half sine, 11ms). Humidity resistance is listed as 10% to 95%, non-condensing.
