Touch PC dual boots Android and Windows on Baytrail

Aug 14, 2015 — by Eric Brown 1,030 views

PiPo has launched an “X8” PC and media player with WiFi, Bluetooth, and a 7-inch touchscreen, that dual-boots Android and Windows on an Intel Atom Z3735F.

Chinese manufacturer PiPo sells a wide variety of Android and Windows tablets, as well as Windows notebooks, and Android phablets and media players. The new PiPo X8 is very similar to a PiPo X7 media player, including its quad-core Intel Atom Baytrail Z3000 system-on-chip. However, the X8 runs Android 4.4 in addition to Windows 8.1 using a dual-boot implementation. It also adds a 7-inch, 1280 x 800-pixel touchscreen set at an angle like an old-fashioned control panel or a kitchen computer. The device currently sells for a low of $104 on GearBest.

Before we go any further, a few words of caution. There are more than the usual number of complaints about software problems on the various PiPo X8 product and shopping pages, including one that says there’s no tech support aside from the comments reply section. A comment on the Amazon page, where the X8 sells for $122, says Windows 8.1 runs fine, with good touch support, but Android touch support and overall performance lags. The user review also noted that the X8 uses an oddball Windows setup with 14 RAW partitions. Other commenters liked the device, considering the price.

A review of the earlier PiPo X7 noted serious heat problems, which the reviewer explains how to fix with a five-minute mod, but otherwise liked the X7 for the price. None of the other commenters mentioned any heat issues on the X8.
