Tiny Yocto-ready ARM COM supports industrial temps

Jul 21, 2015 — by Eric Brown 1,424 views

[Updated: 8:00PM] — Gumstix launched a Linux-ready Overo COM with an 800MHz TI DM3730 SoC, 1GB of flash, a microSD slot, a camera input, and support for -40 to 85°C temperatures.

The latest Gumstix Overo Storm computer-on-module is a ruggedized version of the Overo WaterStorm, with a -40 to 85°C industrial temperature range — versus the WaterStorm’s 0 to 85° — and twice the on-board flash (1GB NAND). Otherwise, the IceStorm is identical to the WaterStorm.

Both the IceStorm and WaterStorm measure 58 x 17 x 4.2mm and weigh 5.6 grams. They both run Yocto Linux on a Texas Instruments DaVinci DM3730 SoC. This 800MHz Cortex-A8 SoC is accompanied by a PowerVR SGX530 GPU with OpenGL ES 2.0 support, as well as a TI C64x digital signal processor (DSP).

The IceStorm and WaterStorm are both further equipped with a 512MB LPDDR RAM, a microSD slot, USB host and OTG ports, and a 24-wire LCD touchscreen interface. Additional onboard I/O includes I2C, MMC, GPIO, audio, GPMC, and ADC. You get double helpings of SPI, UART, and PWM signals.

All this I/O is made available via the standard Overo 70-pin AVX expansion connector. The usual 27-pin Hirose camera connector is also available. Both modules run on 3.3 to 4.2V DC power, managed by a TI PMIC.

There are no wireless interfaces on the modules, but WiFi and Bluetooth 4.1-equipped TI Wilink 8 chips can be found on many other Overo modules including the AM3703 based Airstorm-Y and AirStorm-P, or the DM3730 based FireStorm-Y and –P, and the IronStorm-Y and -P. The only other extended temperature Overo COMs include the IronStorm-Y and FE modules.

Gumstix also announced the discontinuation of the DM3730 based Overo TidalStorm and Overo SandStorm, which runs on a similarly Cortex-A8-based, but non 3D graphics ready, TI Sitara AM3703. Similar functionality is provided by the Overo WaterStorm and Overo AM3703-based Overo EarthSTORM COMs, respectively.

Further information

The Overo IceStorm COM is available for $159, vs. $139 for the WaterStorm. More information may be found on the Overo IceStorm product page and the Gumstix Overo page.
