Thin, rugged Linux computer targets commercial vehicles

Jun 9, 2015 — by Eric Brown 1,362 views

Acrosser’s latest ruggedized vehicle PC is only 35mm tall, runs Linux on a 3rd Gen Core with 16GB RAM, and offers extensive I/O including optional wireless.

The AIV-HM76V1FL is said to be Acrosser’s first slim vehicle mount computer, and is aimed at taxis, police cars, ambulances, firetrucks, heavy duty trucks, buses, construction vehicles, and trains. The computer offers anti-shock and vibration resistance and a 0 to 60°C operating range.

The AIV-HM76V1FL runs Fedora and Ubuntu Linux, as well as Windows, on one of three dual-core processors from Intel’s 3rd Generation “Ivy Bridge” family. These include a Core i7-3517UE, which runs at 1.7GHz (2.8GHz turbo), a 1.6GHz Core i3-3217UE, and a 1.4GHz Celeron 1047UE. You can load the dual SODIMM slots with up to 16GB of DDR3-1333 RAM.

A CompactFlash slot is available, and there’s also a 2.5-inch SATA III bay that offers full protection against shock and vibration when loaded with an SSD. Dual gigabit Ethernet ports are provided along with dual mini-PCIe slots for loading wireless options including 3.5G, WiFi, Bluetooth, and GPS. Antenna connectors are provided for all these options.

The system ships with dual HDMI ports, plus a VGA port with a combo connector, so you can instead choose to add another USB port, or use it for audio or power. The combo connector is also said to simplify touch monitor installation.

Three USB 3.0 ports are provided along with two more internal USB headers. You also get four external serial ports, with one of them supporting RS232/422/485 configurations. Other I/O includes dual CAN interfaces, and audio in and out.
