Stick computer runs Android on quad-core Atom
Oct 21, 2014 — by Eric Brown 7,911 viewsShenzhen Apec Electronics has launched a $110 Android stick computer built around a quad-core Intel Atom Z3735 SoC with 1-2GB of RAM and 16-32GB storage.
The market is awash in under-$100 HDMI dongle devices that run Android on ARM Cortex processors. Now, Intel’s Atom is getting the same treatment, although at a higher price. A Chinese manufacturer called Shenzhen Apec Electronics has launched an Atom-based Meegopad Meego-T01 stick computer, also referred to as the APM-D01. It’s available now on AliExpress and Alibaba, starting at $110. By comparison, the Ugoos UM2 stick computer, which runs Android on a quad-core, Cortex-A9 Rockchip RK3188 system-on-chip, goes for $65.

On Alibaba, the Meego-T01 is said to support Android or Windows 8.1, while AliExpress also lists Linux, as does the Shenzhen Apec product page. Presumably, as the name suggests, the product could also run Meego, Intel’s largely defunct embedded Linux distribution, which has gone on to form the foundation of Jolla’s Sailfish OS.

The Meego-T01 comes with a choice of 32-bit or 64-bit Atom Z3735 (Bay Trail-T) SoCs, which are primarily aimed at tablets. While Intel lists both the Atom Z3735F and Z3735G models as offering 64-bit support, Shenzhen Apec says the G model is 32-bit.
On the Intel pages, the only difference between the SoCs is that the F supports 2GB of DDR3L-RS-1333 RAM at 10.6 GB/s bandwidth while the G supports only 1GB RAM at 5.3 GB/s, suggesting that the G is indeed a 32-bit model. These are also the RAM allotments supplied by the Meego-T01.

Both the Z3735F and Z3735G integrate four 22nm Silvermont cores clocked to 1.33GHz (1.83GHz Turbo), and provide 2MB of cache. They feature Intel HD Graphics clocked to 311MHz, or 646MHz in burst frequency mode. The SoCs run on 2.2 Watts, according to Intel’s Scenario Design Power (SDP) calculation — the actual TDP is no doubt higher than that.
