SparkFun Thing Plus Adopts ESP32-C6 Module with Thread + Zigbee Support

Feb 9, 2024 — by Giorgio Mendoza 292 views

The SparkFun ESP32-C6 Thing Plus, a compact and robust development board, is ideal for innovators looking to craft advanced wireless projects like smart home devices, wireless sensor networks, or other IoT applications. Additionally, it provides support for Arduino IDE, simplifying the software development process.

At the heart of the SparkFun ESP32-C6 Thing Plus is the Espressif ESP32-C6 WROOM-1-N16 module, which is built around a RISC-V single-core processor with the following architecture:

  • ESP32-C6 WROOM-1-N16 – 32-bit RISC-V Single core (up to 160MHz); 320KB ROM, 512KB HP SRAM, 16KB LP SRAM

The SparkFun Thing Plus ESP32-C6, compatible with the Feather ecosystem, features a user-friendly design with 23 GPIO pins on 0.1-inch-spaced PTH headers for easy component connections. It supports a wide range of peripherals like SPI, UART, I2C, and more, with the flexibility to map these to various GPIO pins, enhancing its design versatility.

This development board includes a microSD card slot for expanded storage, a Qwiic connector for seamless integration with SparkFun’s range of sensors and actuators, and an addressable LED for visual feedback.

For power, the board can be connected via USB-C or a LiPo battery. The included MCP73831 battery charger efficiently charges the LiPo battery, while the MAX17048 fuel gauge monitors the battery levels. Additionally, the board features a power LED, a charge LED, and a status LED, providing visual indicators for the board’s power status.
