Sony Introduces AS-DT1, Described as the World’s Smallest and Lightest Precision LiDAR Sensor

Apr 11, 2025 — by Giorgio Mendoza 582 views

Sony Electronics has introduced the AS-DT1, a miniature LiDAR depth sensor targeting applications with strict space and weight constraints. Measuring 29mm x 29mm x 31mm and weighing 50g, it is described as the world’s smallest and lightest LiDAR sensor in its class.

The AS-DT1 is built on Sony’s proprietary Direct Time of Flight LiDAR technology. It employs a Single Photon Avalanche Diode sensor to deliver precise 3D measurements across length, width, and depth. With a horizontal field of view of 30° or more and 576 ranging points (24 x 24), the sensor supports a frame rate of 30 fps, with a reduced 15 fps mode for maximum distance operation.

Designed for real-world deployment, the AS-DT1 can detect low-reflectivity and low-contrast objects, enabling accurate depth measurements in environments with varied lighting and material conditions. It can measure up to 40 meters indoors and 20 meters outdoors under bright conditions (100,000 lux), with an accuracy margin of ±5 cm at 10 meters.

The device features a rugged aluminum alloy housing, balancing robustness with minimal weight. Two USB-C ports, an external power connector, UART interface, and a trigger input expand its integration options for different platforms.

Further information

The AS-DT1 is expected to be commercially available in Spring 2026. A prototype will be exhibited at the Xponential trade show in Houston from May 20–22, 2025. More information is available at the product announcement.

  1. Per Zetterlund says:

Well the Sipeed MaixSense-A010 is 23 x 40 x10mm, which is a lot smaller. And it has 100×100 pixels and a display.
