Rugged mini-ITX based box PC goes all out on expansion

Jul 21, 2016 — by Eric Brown 1,165 views

Portwell’s rugged, fanless “WEBS-35C3” box PC offers 6th Gen Intel Core CPUs, triple display and 4K video, and expands via mini-PCIe, PCIe, PCI, and M.2.

The WEBS-35C3 is based on Portwell’s WADE-8017 Mini-ITX board, which runs on the latest, 14nm-fabricated 6th Gen Intel Core (“Skylake”) processors with LGA1151 socket and Intel Q170 chipset. Applications include kiosk, intelligent digital security, in-vehicle infotainment, factory automation, and surveillance, says Portwell.

Earlier this year, Portwell released an WEBS-21A0 industrial PC based on its smaller Nano-ITX NANO-6050 SBC, which in turn is based on a 5th Gen Broadwell Core chip. Other Skylake-based industrial PCs include the Adlink MVP-6000 that, like the WEBS-35C3, appears to be built around a Mini-ITX board.

The fanless, 253 x 201 x 123mm WEBS-35C3 computer gives you a choice of three 35W TDP Skylake Core chips: the quad-core i7-6700TE and i5-6500TE, and the dual-core i3-6100TE. Unlike Broadwell, Skylake offers advanced Intel HD Graphics Gen9, giving you greater multimedia firepower including 4K and triple display support.

The WEBS-35C3 has almost all of the features of the WADE-8017, including up to 32GB DDR4 RAM, dual GbE ports, dual RS-232/422/485 ports, and four RS-232 ports. It also offers the two USB 2.0 and four USB 3.0 ports, as well as an exposed GPIO port, and audio I/O.

Dual 2.5-inch SATA 3.0 slots are available, along with VGA, DP, and HDMI ports. Optional WiFi, 3G/GPS, and 4G LTE modules can be added via a mini-PCIe slot or M.2 socket.

The system makes good use of the WADE-8017’s unusual PCIe expansion scheme, which offers a “Side Expansion Bus” (SEB) that enables coplanar PCIe expansion. In addition to the mini-PCIe slot, you get 2x PCIe x1, 1x PCIe x1, 2x PCIe x8, and 1x PCI, with the latter available with an isolated chamber that accommodates a PCI add-on card separately.

The rugged WEBS-35C3 offers a -20 to 50°C range (approximately — the spec says TBD), and rated shock and vibration resistance. There’s also a 12-36V DC power supply. As usual with Portwell, no OS support is listed, but Linux and Windows should run fine.
