Skylake-H Mini-ITX SBC has 4 GbE, 4 USB 3.0, and 3 HD video ports

Sep 4, 2016 — by Rick Lehrbaum 2,092 views

Kontron’s Linux-friendly “mITX-SKL-H” is based on Intel Skylake-H processors, and offers generous helpings of GbE, HD graphics, SATA 3.0, USB 3.0, and PCIe.

Intel’s 6th Gen Core “Skylake” processors launch last year precipitated a steady stream of announcements by makers of single board computers (SBCs) and computer-on-modules (COMs) aimed at industrial and embedded applications. To date, however, most of the SBC and COM releases we’ve encountered involve the Skylake-Y and -U processors with TDPs in the 4.5W to 15W range, and the subset of Skylake-S processors with 35W TDPs.

In conjunction with last year’s “Skylake” debut, Kontron said it would be announcing a Mini-ITX board based on the new 6th Gen Intel processor generation. That board has now been announced as the “mITX-SKL-H,” based on Intel’s “Skylake-H” Xeon, Core, and Celeron processors, with 45W and 35W TDPs. This new board appears to be Kontron’s first Skylake-based SBC, and follows the company’s recently-introduced COMe-cSL6 COM that integrates a range of Intel’s 15W TDP “Skylake-U” processors.

Kontron characterizes the mITX-SKL-H SBC as a “mini powerhouse” that was “designed especially for performance-intensive applications in harsh environments.” The board’s data sheet lists an operating temperature range of 0 to 60°C — which presumably requires a beefy fan like that shown in the board’s photo up above, or some other form of fairly aggressive thermal management. Additionally, Kontron promises seven years of “long-term availability” for its Mini-ITX products, a fairly standard requirement for SBCs and COMs that get designed into industrial or commercial equipment.

In addition to the mITX-SKL-H’s selection of high performance Skylake-H processors, including Xeon, Core, and Celeron options, the SBC is notable for its generous array of I/O and expansion interfaces. The board’s rear-panel coastline I/O includes four GbE ports, a pair each of USB 3.0 and 2.0 ports, two DisplayPorts, an optional mini-DisplayPort, and a set of three audio in/out jacks.

Internally, there are four SATA 3.0 interfaces, optional additional USB 3.0 ports, RS232 and RS422/485 serial ports, and an LVDS option, plus sockets for Mini-PCIe or mSATA and PCIe x16 expansion cards. There’s also an S/PDIF interface somewhere, but we were unable to spot it definitively on the board’s photo (it might be the round connector toward the right edge of the coastline I/O photo).

Earlier this year competitor Commell launched LV-67S and LV-67T Mini-ITX SBCs that also use Intel’s Skylake processors. The former is based on the socketed Skylake-S processors, while the latter uses the soldered-on (FCBGA1356) Skylake-U processors.
