Rugged, fanless computer runs Ubuntu on Haswell

Perfectron’s rugged “SR10M” system offers a 4th Gen Core CPU, four GbE ports, stackable expansion, -40 to 70° operation, and MIL-STD-810G ruggedization.

The SR10M is the latest in Perfectron’s Stackrack series of rugged, MIL-STD-rated stackable embedded computers equipped with Intel Haswell CPUs and designed primarily for military vehicles. The SR10M is built around an OXY5737A EBX form-factor single board computer (see farther below) equipped with the quad-core, 2.4GHz (3.4GHz turbo) Intel Core i7-4700EQ of the fourth “Haswell” generation of Core CPUs. It also offers an Intel QM76 chipset.

Like the 5th Gen Core equipped OXY5638A SBC, which we covered in Sep. 2015, the OXY5737A adopts an obscure PC/104 fork called “StackPC” in place of EPIC’s usual PC/104-Plus or PCIe/104 modular expansion. This scheme allows the SBC and the Stackrack embedded computers to be flexibly augmented in a stackable design that supports standard rackmount cabinets. Like the OXY5638A SBC (shown below), the SR10M system that builds upon it features soldered processors and fanless operation. While the SBC supports an extended operating temperature range of -40 to 85°C, the fanless system is rated for -40 to 70°C operation, albeit at an unspecified, reduced processor clock rate. Both the SBC and system also are said to meet MIL-STD-810G requirements for thermal, shock, and vibration resistance. To help meet these rigorous specs, the SBC uses rugged, Swissbit XR-DIMM RAM modules, in this case only one module for 8GB DDR3-1600.

The 262 x 149 x 76mm, 3.0-Kilogram SR10M expands upon this rugged profile with an IP54-protected aluminum chassis with a cold plate conduction cooling design. M12 connectors are provided for two of the four available Gigabit Ethernet ports, as well for as the system’s wide-range, 9 to 36 volt DC input power connector, which is protected under a hand-screw cover. Lockable ports are provided for the DVI-I interface, and for the two DisplayPorts, which support up to 3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz resolution.

The SR10M can be purchased with optional SSD of up 512GB, accessed via an mSATA interface shared with a mini-PCIe slot. Four USB 3.0 ports are provided, along with an RS-232/422/485 port and audio I/O.

The separately available OXY5737A SBC inside the SR10M offers more COM and USB interfaces, with six of each, and also provides dual SATA III interfaces. The 203 x 146mm EBX form-factor board enables stackable expansion via a PCIe/104 bus (with PCIe x16 and four PCIe x1 interfaces), and it provides a second mini-PCIe slot with SIM card slot for a 3.5G radio. A resistive touch controller is also available.


The SR10M ships as a default with Ubuntu 14.04. Like the OXY5737A, the SR10M computer also supports Fedora 20 Linux, as well as Windows 7/8 and unnamed RTOSes.
