Rugged, Jetson-based computer supports up to six CSI cameras
Apr 5, 2019 — by Eric Brown 1,054 viewsAaeon’s fanless, $1,067 “Boxer-8130AI” embedded computer runs Ubuntu on a Jetson TX2 module and features 6x MIPI-CSI2 camera lanes, -20 to 50°C support, and a wide-range power supply.
Aaeon continues to spin different Boxer-branded, AI focused embedded computers based on Nvidia’s Jetson TX2 module. The latest Boxer-8130A focuses on vision processing applications such as machine vision and AIoT gateways.

Like the most recent Boxer-8110AI, the Boxer-8130AI is limited to a single Gigabit Ethernet port instead of the 4x GbE ports available on the Boxer-8120AI. Whereas the 8120AI has dual COM ports, the 8130AI has a single RS-232 port. It lacks the CAN connector found on the 8110AI.

The fanless system’s special power is its MIPI-CSI2 board to board connector (Samtec QTH-060-01-H-D-A), which supports up to 6x Jetson-compatible cameras from Appro Photoelectron, D3, and E-con Systems. We’ve covered a number of compatible E-con cameras, including the 6-camera e-CAM30_HEXCUTX2 and the most recent, stereo-vision STEEReoCAM.

The Boxer-8130A is the only model of the Boxer-AI trio with a wide-range power supply, which is offered via a dual-pin terminal block. (The announcement calls it 9-24V while the product page says 10-24V.) The fanless, wallmount-ready system has the same 153 x 101 x 30mm footprint — and $1,067 price — as the 8120AI.

Like the other two systems, the Boxer-8130AI runs Ubuntu 16.04 on Nvidia’s Jetson TX2 module, which is equipped with an Arm-based Tegra SoC with dual Cortex-A72 like “Denver” cores and 4x -A57 cores. The SoC incorporates 256-core Pascal graphics supported with CUDA libraries for AI, vision processing, GPU-accelerated parallel processing, and deep/machine learning.
The Jetson TX2 module incorporates 8GB of LPDDR4 RAM and 32GB eMMC 5.1. Although not mentioned by Aaeon, the module also provides WiFi and Bluetooth via a Cypress BCM4354 chipset. Dual SMA antenna holes are available on the Boxer-8130AI.

The Boxer-8130AI is equipped with a microSD slot, as well as HDMI, micro-USB OTG, and 2x USB 3.0 host ports. Options include SATA and 3x USB 2.0 connectors (or at least we think that’s the translation for “USB 2 x 3”). There’s also a power LED and a remote on/off switch.
Like the Boxer-8120AI, the system provides 5 Grms, 5 ~ 500Hz anti-vibration resistance instead of 3 Grms on the 8110AI. It also offers extended -20 to 50°C support.
