Rugged Atom E3800 COM includes IoT support

Mar 10, 2014 — by Eric Brown 619 views

Eurotech announced a rugged, Linux-ready COM based on the Intel Atom E3800, offering dual video, SATA, GbE, and USB ports, PCIe expansion, and IoT support.

Eurotech developed its first Catalyst computer-on-module back in 2008, built around the Intel Atom Z500. Over the years, the company has churned out a number of Linux-ready Catalyst modules in the same proprietary, 100 x 67mm (3.9 x 2.8 inch) form-factor. The COMs have been devoted to various Atom processors, including the circa-2012 Catalyst CV , which offers 32nm “Cedar Trail” Atoms.

Catalyst BT

The new “Catalyst BT” leverages the fastest, most power-efficient Atom yet in Intel’s 22nm-fabricated Atom E3800 (Bay Trail-I) family, offering single-, dual-, and 1.91GHz quad-core versions. The COM is designed for space- and temperature-constrained devices in medical, industrial, gaming, retail, and automotive markets, says the company.

Eurotech offers a choice of 4GB of the error-correcting ECC DDR3L DRAM or 8GB without ECC. The module also supplies an onboard SATA solid state drive in capacities up to 64GB, as well as an onboard gigabit Ethernet controller.

The Catalyst BT enables I/O including dual SATA 2 and SD interfaces, and two video ports with a choice of eDP, DP, and HDMI offered on either. One port also provides a choice of VGA, while the other instead lets you opt for LVDS.

Additional interfaces include support for a USB 3.0 port, as well as seven USB 2.0 ports. The COM also delivers HD audio I/O, JTAG, GPIO, and various serial interfaces. You get a choice of four PCIe x1 or one PCIe x4 expansion interfaces, as well as LPC and SMB expansion.

The rugged Catalyst BT provides support for industrial 40 to 85°C temperatures, as well as MIL STD 810G certified shock and vibration resistance, says Eurotech. The company mentions that a carrier board is required, but made no mention of a specific board, or whether the COM will be supported with its Catalyst FX board.

The Catalyst BT ships with Linux or Windows, and supports Eurotech’s Everyware Device Cloud remote management technology, which supports Internet of Things and M2M protocols, as well as cloud-based databases and brokers, via REST APIs. It also works with the related Everyware Software Framework (ESF), Eurotech’s Java-based framework, said to enable portable, high level programming of embedded devices.
