RISC-V-Based KVM Solution in PCIe Form Factor with Low/High Profile Compatibility

Oct 1, 2024 — by Giorgio Mendoza 957 views

The NanoKVM-PCIe is a recent solution from Sipeed, designed to simplify remote management of ATX PC cases and 2U servers. Built on the RISC-V architecture, it offers low power consumption and easy installation, with compatibility for both low-profile and high-profile PCIe brackets.

This product follows the recent release of the Lichee NanoKVM Cube, an IP-KVM solution based on the LicheeRV Nano board.

For reference, the LicheeRV Nano is equipped with the SG2002 CPU, which includes a 1GHz RISC-V C906 or ARM A53 as the primary core, a 700MHz RISC-V C906 as the secondary core, and a low-power 8051 core running at 25-300MHz. It also features an NPU with 1 TOPS INT8 performance and BF16 support, along with 256MB of built-in DDR3 memory.

One of the key features of the NanoKVM-PCIe is its flexibility in power options. It supports power via PCIe 3.3V aux, allowing the device to operate even when the PC is powered off. Additional power options include Power over Ethernet, USB, or a 9-pin connector, providing adaptability for various setups.

In terms of performance, NanoKVM-PCIe supports 1080P video transmission at 60fps with minimal video delay (100–160ms), handling MJPEG and H.264 encoding. It also features virtual HID, virtual CD-ROM, and Wake-on-LAN functionality, making it a powerful yet affordable solution for remote management.

Sipeed mentions that the product is open source, allowing users to build their own software with Go and React running on Linux. However, documentation for this product is not yet available on their Wiki pages or GitHub.

Further information

During the pre-order phase, the NanoKVM-PCIe models are approximately 10% off. The base model, NanoKVM-PCIe Eth, is priced at $40, while the NanoKVM-PCIe Eth + Wi-Fi version costs $45. For additional features, the NanoKVM-PCIe Eth + PoE is priced at $50, and the NanoKVM-PCIe Eth + Wi-Fi + PoE is available for $55. An additional commission fee of $2 or $3 applies, depending on the model.

The first 500 units will ship in October, with the remainder shipping in November. Shipping costs vary by location.
