Raspberry Pi lookalike offers HDMI 2.0 and optional M.2

Oct 23, 2018 — by Eric Brown 5,660 views

Geniatech’s “XPI-S905X” is a new Raspberry Pi pseudo clone with a quad -A53 Amlogic S905X plus 2GB RAM, up to 16GB eMMC, 4K-ready HDMI 2.0, LAN, 4x USB, touch-enabled LVDS, and optional M.2.

Geniatech, which is known for Qualcomm based SBCs such as the Snapdragon 410 based, 96Boards-like Development Board IV and Snapdragon 820E based Development Board 8, has posted specs for a Raspberry Pi form factor board with a quad -A53, Amlogic S905X with 1/6GHz to 2GHz performance. No pricing is available for the XPI-S905X, which appears to be aimed at the OEM market.

The XPI-S905X was discovered by Notebook Italia (translated) and picked up by
CNXSoft. Notebook Italia also did a video overview in English at the recent Global Sources 2018 Trade Fair in Hong Kong, in which a Geniatech rep mentions plans for future RPi 3 style boards based on Rockchip, Realtek, and additional Amlogic SoCs (see farther below).

The Amlogic S905X was previously featured in the original Khadas Vim SBC. (The Khadas Vim2 advances to an octa-core, -A53 Amlogic S912). It also appeared in Libre Computers’ Le Potato, also known as the AML-S905X-CC. (Le Potato was recently followed by Libre’s lower-end La Frite, which is based on quad -A53 Amlogic S805X that lacks the S905X’s 4K support.)

Like Le Potato, the XPI-S905X closely approximates the size, layout, and feature set of the Raspberry Pi 3 and upgrades the HDMI port to a 4K ready HDMI 2.0. The Geniatech SBC also adds dual-channel LVDS with an optional capacitive touchscreen in addition to the standard composite video/analog jack.

You can load twice the Pi’s RAM with 2GB, and up to four time the storage, with up to 16GB eMMC. There’s also an optional M.2 slot with SSD support. On the other hand, there’s no onboard WiFi/Bluetooth module, and it’s unclear if the M.2 slot supports a wireless module.

Specifications listed for the XPI-S905X include:

  • Processor — Amlogic S905X (4x 64-bit Cortex-A53 cores @ 1.6GHz to 2GHz); penta-core Mali-450 MP2 GPU (3x fragment/pixel cores plus 2x vertex shader cores) @ 750MHz
  • Memory:
    • 2GB DDR3 RAM default (1GB also possible)
