Raspberry Pi Connect Exits Beta with Version 2.5 Release

May 9, 2025 — by Giorgio Mendoza 247 views

Raspberry Pi has officially ended the beta phase of Raspberry Pi Connect, its remote access platform for connecting to Raspberry Pi devices from anywhere. With the release of version 2.5, the service now includes major updates to connection management, significantly reducing data usage and improving responsiveness.

Launched in early 2024, Raspberry Pi Connect quickly gained traction, reaching over 100,000 installations. The service enables users to remotely access their Pi’s desktop through a secure interface without additional configuration. Version 2.5 refines the underlying mechanisms, particularly in how the client software communicates with Raspberry Pi servers.

Earlier versions of Connect relied on frequent polling, where the client would periodically send HTTP requests to check for incoming connection attempts. While this approach was scalable from a server perspective, it resulted in unnecessary device wake-ups and higher-than-needed data consumption. Version 2.5 replaces polling with a single long-lived HTTP connection. This allows Raspberry Pi’s servers to push a notification to the device when a user initiates a session, improving energy and data efficiency.

Heartbeat signaling, used to update the Connect dashboard with device status changes, has also been improved. Previous versions sent multiple redundant heartbeats in quick succession. With version 2.5, the heartbeat system is debounced and each update is compressed before transmission, reducing bandwidth usage by approximately 50%.

Raspberry Pi OS has also been updated this week to include the latest Connect version. Users planning a system update may prefer to install the OS update directly, which includes all recent software changes.
