PINE64 Unveils StarPro64 RISC-V SBC with EIC7700X SoC

Oct 2, 2024 — by Giorgio Mendoza 518 views

The StarPro64 is the latest addition to PINE64’s line of RISC-V-based hardware, continuing their commitment to the architecture over the past three years. Key features include support for up to 32GB of RAM, dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, and more.

Since 2021, several of PINE64’s devices, including the popular Pinecil, have adopted RISC-V. While the Ox64 was technically the first Linux-capable SBC from PINE64, the Star64 marked their first full-fledged RISC-V single-board computer, laying the groundwork for last year’s PINETAB-V tablet release.

PINE64’s focus on RISC-V extends beyond their existing product line, with the introduction of the StarPro64, a more powerful version of the Star64. At the core of the StarPro64 is the EIC7700X system-on-chip, an upgraded variant of the EIC7700. The CPU speed has been increased to 1.8 GHz from the previous 1.4 GHz, and the neural processing unit performance has been boosted from 13.3 TOPS to 19.95 TOPS, making it a more capable board for various tasks.

This SoC is also featured in another upcoming product, the Milk-V Megrez by Milk-V, which includes a quad-core SiFive P550 CPU with a 1.6 GHz clock speed and an NPU offering similar performance.

According to the announcement, the StarPro64 will be available with 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB of LPDDR5 RAM.

The StarPro64 follows the model-A board layout, similar to earlier PINE64 products such as the Pine A64 and ROCKPro64. Its design closely mirrors that of the Star64, with key I/O ports in the same positions.

This includes dual Ethernet ports, a digital video output port, and a 12V power input at the rear. The front of the board features a power button, USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports, and it has a full GPIO header, a 4x PCIe lane, an eMMC slot, onboard Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, and heatsink mounting holes that match the ROCKPro64 layout.

Further Information

While a specific availability date has not been confirmed, the first prototype with 32GB of RAM was completed in late September. Testing is ongoing, and developer units are expected to be distributed soon, pending positive community feedback.
