OrangePi Equips Gateway Board with RISC-V Processor, Four RJ45 Ports, and OpenWRT Support

Jun 15, 2025 — by Giorgio Mendoza 1,168 views

This week, OrangePi introduced the R2S, a compact board for embedded networking and gateway applications, running OpenWRT by default. Key features include dual 2.5G Ethernet ports, dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, and USB Type-C power input.

The OrangePi R2S is powered by the Ky X1 8-core RISC-V AI processor, the same chip found in the OrangePi RV2 released earlier this year. This CPU offers over 40K DMIPS of general-purpose compute performance and integrates 2 TOPS of AI arithmetic at INT8 precision directly into the CPU cores.

Memory configurations include 2GB, 4GB, or 8GB of LPDDR4X, alongside 8GB of onboard eMMC storage. The board also includes a MicroSD card slot for boot or data expansion.

Networking is a central focus, with four Ethernet ports in total. Two 2.5G ports are powered by RTL8125BG chips, and two are standard Gigabit Ethernet ports. In the default OpenWRT configuration, the leftmost Gigabit port is set as a WAN interface, while the remaining three operate as LAN ports. The LAN side includes a built-in DHCP server with a default address range of 192.168.2.0/24 and gateway 192.168.2.1, according to the user manual.

I/O connectivity includes one USB 3.0 port, one USB 2.0 port (used for flashing or upgrades), a 3.3V TTL debug serial header, and a MASKROM button for recovery tasks. Power is supplied via a USB Type-C connector rated at 5V/3A. The PCB measures 79.2 × 46 × 1.6 mm and does not include mounting holes like the OrangePi RV2, which may affect enclosure design.

Software support includes OpenWRT and Ubuntu. OpenWRT comes pre-configured with WAN/LAN roles and can be accessed via SSH or LuCI. However, at the time of writing, the product page lists download links for OpenWRT, Ubuntu, and GitHub, but only the GitHub link is functional.

The official user manual provides extensive documentation, including hardware overviews, flashing instructions for MicroSD, eMMC, and USB devices, serial debugging, OpenWRT configuration, software package management, and SDK usage. It also covers kernel, rootfs, and full system image compilation for advanced users.
