Online carrier board dev tool adds AM335x module support

Mar 25, 2016 — by Eric Brown 877 views

Gumstix has added a customizable carrier board design for Critical Link’s MitySOM-335x COM to its quick-turn carrier board design and manufacturing service.

Last November, Gumstix announced that its Geppetto Design-to-Order (D2O) online DIY design tool and quick-turn prototype manufacturing service would be extended beyond its own Overo modules to provide carrier board customization services for other third-party COMs and SBCs based on the same TI Sitara AM335x SoC used on the Overo. Specifically, Gumstix said it would support Critical Link’s MitySOM-335x, DAVE’s Diva AM335x, and the BeagleBone Black, all of which use the same Cortex-A8-based Sitara SoC.

In February, Gumstix announced Geppetto support for a customizable Raspberry Pi Compute Module carrier board, and also began shipping ready-to-use Pi Compute Module carrier boards based on the stock Geppetto design. In addition to these, Gumstix’s own Texas Instruments OMAP4-based DuoVero modules are supported with a Geppetto-based carrier board design.

Critical Link’s MitySOM-335x (see details farther below) is the first of the third-party AM335x COMs to be supported through Geppetto. As with the Pi Compute Module offering, assembled and tested carrier boards based on the stock Geppetto design are available for purchase from Gumstix. Also, like its Pi Compute Module support, Gepetto’s MitySOM-335x support comprises both a complete carrier board design and a minimal “connector” design, letting developers choose either as the starting point for their custom carrier board development projects.

The stock expansion board design for the MitySOM-335x module offers the following features:

  • SPI, UART, and I2C headers
  • 20-pin GPIO header
  • Audio codec
  • Left and right speakers
  • MicroSD card slot for booting
  • HDMI port for display and audio
  • Gigabit Ethernet port
  • 2x USB Type-A ports

The ready-to-use MitySOM-335x carrier board is also available as part of a development kit. The kit includes a micro-USB cable, a 5V power supply, and a microSD card that contains a pre-configured Linux build based on Yocto Project code. In addition to its browser-based tool for designing a custom carrier board, Geppetto also implements a manufacturing design service that offers 15-day turnaround for one or more prototypes of the resulting board design.

MitySOM-335x COM details

Critical Link’s MitySOM-335xbelongs to a line of Linux-ready, Mity-branded COMs such as the MityDSP-L138 module, based on a TI OMAP-L138 ARM9+DSP SoC, and the MityARM-5CSX, which is built around an Altera Cyclone V Cortex-A9/FPGA hybrid SoC. The MitySOM-335x is built around TI’s 1GHz, Cortex-A8 Sitara AM335x, which is available in six SoC models. The Sitara options include models with combinations of PoweVR SGX530 3D graphics acceleration, EtherCAT, and Programmable Real-Time Unit (PRU) subsystem for industrial interface customization.

The MitySOM-335x offers up to 1GB DDR3 or optionally, 256MB DDR2 RAM, as well as up to 1GB NAND flash and 8MB NOR flash. It supports dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, and offers a 24-bit WXGA LCD interface with touch support. The module supports dual USB ports, 3x MMC/SD/SDIO interfaces, and industrial I/O like 2x CAN, 6x UART, 2x SPI, 2x I2C, 2x McASP, GPIO, and more. For further details, see Critical Link’s MitySOM-335x product page.
