Arduino Srl’s new “Arduino Industrial 101” SBC includes Arduino circuitry and I/O, along with a soldered-on WiFi module that runs Linino Linux.

Last November, Arduino Srl promised an Arduino Industrial 101 carrier board for Dog Hunter’s WiFi-enabled Chiwawa module, which is supported by the OpenWrt-based Linino Linux distribution. Arduino has now unveiled the resulting product: a $40, sandwich-style single board computer with a soldered-on, Arduino-branded version of the Chiwawa module, along with Linino Linux support.

The Linino Chiwawa is an LGA (land grid array) module that’s built around Qualcomm’s MIPS-based Atheros AR9331 wireless SoC, accompanied by 64MB DDR2 RAM and 16MB SPI flash. The module provides 2.4GHz 1×1 11n WiFi (with antenna) and supports Ethernet with PoE and switching, plus USB, micro-USB, and microSD connections.

On its own, the Linino Chiwawa module can connect to Arduino boards via a 34 x 20.7mm Chiwawa Collar evaluation board (EVB). The Collar EVB (photo) offers an Ethernet port with PoE, a microSD slot, and USB host and micro-USB ports.

Arduino Industrial 101 details

With the Arduino Industrial 101, Arduino Srl has combined all these elements together into a convenient, sandwich-style single board computer with the WiFi module soldered directly on-board. The carrier board portion of the assembly integrates a 16MHz ATmega32u4 MPU along with 2.5KB SRAM and 32KB flash, plus 20x DIO pins that include UARTs, 7x PWMs, and 12x analog inputs.

The Industrial 101’s carrier board also provides a USB OTG port, plus expansion headers with signals including 2x PWM, 4x analog inputs, and 3x GPIO. Ethernet and DogOLED pins are provided along with two user buttons, two resets, and LEDs. The 5V board measures 51 x 42mm and consumes 130mA.

The Arduino Industrial 101 appeared at the same time as Arduino Srl’s new Arduino Uno WiFi board, which also provides WiFi, but without the Linux support. In addition, Arduino Srl sells the original Arduino Yún and Arduino Yún Mini SBCs, which like the Chiwawa, run Linino on Atheros AR9331 SoCs.

In addition, Arduino Srl sells the Arduino Tian, which combines a Linino-enabled 560MHz MIPS Qualcomm AR9432 WiFi SoC for high level functions and networking, a Qualcomm CSR8510 chip for Bluetooth EDR/BLE 4.0a support, and a SAMD21 32-bit Cortex M0+ microprocessor for real-time control. The Tian sells for 87 Euros ($99).

On the other side of the great forked Arduino divide is Arduino LLC, which recently released a WiFi-enabled Arduino MKR1000 spin on the Arduino Zero. The MKR1000 doesn’t run Linux, but this week, Arduino LLC released an Arduino and Genuino Yún Shield that runs standard OpenWrt on an Atheros AR9331, letting you add Linux-driven WiFi and other functions via sketch uploads to any standard Arduino board.
