Nano-ITX SBC and industrial PC tap Broadwell chips
Mar 17, 2016 — by Eric Brown 905 viewsPortwell’s “NANO-6050” Nano-ITX SBC offers a 5th Gen Core CPU, plus SATA, mSATA, mini-PCIe, and dual GbE, and is available in the form of an industrial PC.
Portwell’s NANO-6050 is very similar to its Atom E3800-based NANO-6060 SBC, but instead offers a choice of dual-core, 5th Gen Intel Core U-series i5 and i3 processors. Both boards are part of a long line of NANO branded Nano-ITX (120 x 120mm) boards dating back to the Atom Z5xx based NANO-8044 from 2008. The NANO-6050 is also offered as part of a Portwell industrial PC called the WEBS-21A0 (see farther below).

The NANO-6050 datasheet shows only an icon for Windows Embedded, but a new WEBS-21A0 industrial PC based on the NANO-6050 also sports the Linux Tux logo (see farther below). We imagine the board runs Linux just fine on its own as well.
We missed last June’s announcement of Portwell’s NANO-6061 Nano-ITX board with Intel Pentium and Celeron “Braswell” chips. The NANO-6061 is similar to the NANO-6060 and NANO-6050, with some key differences such as the addition of an M.2 socket. The board acts as the foundation for a new WEBS-21B0 industrial PC similar to the WEBS-21A0 discussed farther below.

The new NANO-6050 has 7-year plus availability, and is designed for digital signage, kiosk, POS, and industrial control devices including “passively cooled and hermetically sealed systems,” says Portwell. The board supports DirectX 11.2, OpenGL 4.3, and OpenCL 2.0, as well as triple displays. In single display mode, either one of the mini-DisplayPorts can achieve 4096 x 2160-pixel resolution according to the datasheet, or 3840 x 2160 according to the press release.

Compared to the Atom-based NANO-6060, the NANO-6050 offers up to twice the RAM at 8GB, and has single SATA and mSATA connections instead of dual SATA ports and a microSD. There’s no PCIe slot, but there is a mini-PCIe slot.

NANO-6050 coastline ports
The 6050 loses the 6060’s VGA port, and instead offers dual mini-DisplayPorts along with the earlier LVDS interface. Four of the six USB ports are 3.0, but they’re all on onboard headers. The two coastline USB ports are 2.0.
Other features include dual coastline Gigabit Ethernet ports, audio I/O, an RS232/422/485 interface, and GPIO. The 12V board supports 0 to 60°C temperatures, and is touted for its low profile of 16.4mm.
Specifications listed for the NANO-6050 include:

WEBS-21A0
The WEBS-21A0 industrial PC encloses the NANO-6050 in a rugged, 150 x 150 x 60mm, 1.6-Kilo case, and integrates a 2.5-inch SATA bay and additional real-world ports. The operating range is a modest 0 to 50°C, but the system also offers 5Grms, 5 to 500Hz vibration and 50G, 11msec shock resistance, says Portwell.

Features are similar to the underlying NANO-6050. However, in addition to the dual USB 2.0 ports, there’s a USB 3.0 port on the rear panel. An option adds two more USB 3.0 ports. The serial port has also been exposed on the back panel, which also adds a power button, HDD LED, and antenna hole.
