Mini UPS targets NUCs and other mini-PCs

CompuLab unveiled a “Fit-Uptime” UPS that offers up to three hours of 12V DC backup, designed for its Fit and Intense PCs, Intel’s NUCs, and other mini-PCs.

CompuLab developed its Fit-Uptime uninterrupted power supply for its Linux-ready, AMD and Intel based Fit-PC and Intense PC mini-PCs, especially when used for mission-critical applications in which power outages are not an option. It also works with many other mini-PCs, including Intel NUC, says the company.

There’s no room for internal UPS circuitry in mini-PCs, and most external UPS devices use AC power and are bulky and expensive. CompuLab saw an opportunity for a compact, low-cost DC-powered UPS designed specifically for mini-PCs.

The $68 Fit-Uptime measures 80 x 68 x 32mm, and can provide up to three hours of 12V battery power during a blackout. It also supports 19V operation, making it compatible with Intel NUC devices.

Upon power loss, the device instantly switches to backup-battery power “ensuring the mini-PC does not reset,” says CompuLab. The Fit-Uptime simultaneously powers the mini-PC and recharges the battery. When used with a Fit-PC, a twist-lock prevents the UPS from accidentally becoming disconnected.


Specs listed for the Fit-Uptime include:

  • Capacity — 18 watt hour

  • Output when powered — 12V to 19V / 5A
  • Battery — Lithium polymer, non-replaceable
  • Dimensions — 80 x 68 x 32mm

  • Plug/jack dimensions — 5.5 x 2.5mm barrel

With Fit-Uptime “issues like bricking, file-system corruption, downtime, and failed reboots are likely to be non-existent,” says CompuLab. The company also notes that especially for large, multi-product installations, the device saves money and improves time-to-market by avoiding the need for exhaustive system testing for reliability before fielding.

Other UPS devices covered on LinuxGizmos include the Juice4Halt. This supercapacitor based micro-UPS is designed specifically for SBCs such as the Raspberry Pi.

    How does this thing communicate a power outage to the connected computer so it can safely shutdown?

    Signaling to the computer was considered during the design of fit-Uptime and was eliminated in order to keep the device as simple as possible (that is, with no drivers to install and no modification to applications) under the assumption that brown-outs and blackouts lasting several minutes are vastly more common than blackouts lasting hours.

      +Irad Why eliminate such a thing.. The driver could be optional thing downloaded from the internet and used only if people want that feature. Also, a power loss for hours can happen if e.g. somebody accidentally knocks a plug or if a fuse goes in a house.

    A mobile usb battery can be used the same way on arm boxes. they consume far less power and can be powered by micro-usb wire generally

      What battery packs generally lack is the fast switching between line power and battery backup (and sometimes charging and powering in parallel). Fast switching is a key element in fit-Uptime design.

    I have nothing to comment, but a question. My NUC 10 is equipped with 1 TB SSD and 32 GB or RAM. The fan turns on quite often. I wonder if this device woul back it up for at least 30 minutes. When electricity is interrupted it usually comes back in a few minutes. If it isn’t back in 15 minutes, I might as well turn everything off. So, would this piece of equipment help my NUC-10 NOT lose any data?
