Mini-ITX triplets run Fedora on Skylake

Mar 3, 2016 — by Eric Brown 1,316 views

Aaeon’s industrial Mini-ITX EMB-Q170A, EMB-Q170B, and EMB-H110B SBCs tap Intel’s 6th Gen Core “Skylake” CPUs, with up to 32MB DDR4 RAM and 4K video support.

Aaeon was one of several companies to unveil COM Express modules in conjunction with Intel’s 14nm-fabricated 6th Generation Core “Skylake” processors back in September, announcing a pair of COM Express Type 6 modules called the COM-SKHB6 and COM-SKUC6 COM-SKHB6. Now, the company has unveiled three industrial Mini-ITX boards that run Fedora Linux or Windows on Skylake chips.

The 170 x 170mm EMB-Q170A, EMB-Q170B, and EMB-H110B boards are configured for 0 to 60°C operation, and are principally designed for ATMs, digital signage, and PoS applications, says Aaeon. All three Mini-ITX SBCs support up to 32MB of DDR4 RAM.

All the devices offer LG1151 sockets for the high-end “S Series” 6th Gen Cores at up to 65W TDP. (The reference to “i Series” on the datasheets refers to the i7, i5, and i3 Core naming scheme.) Aaeon’s higher-end, 4K ready EMB-Q170A and EMB-Q170B boards, which also offer M2 storage, use the Intel A170 chipset, while the lower-end 2K-ready EMB-H110B uses an Intel H110 chipset.

Other Skylake based Mini-ITX SBCs include Portwell’s WADE-8017, and the Advantech AIMB-275 and Arbor ITX-i89H0.

The summaries below touch only on the major features of the new Aaeon boards. More details can be found in PDF datasheets available from the product pages linked to at the end of the article.

This high-end, full-height board features an M2 connector, dual SATA 6Gbps ports, four coastline USB 3.0 ports, dual coastline USB 2.0 ports. The EMB-Q170A also provides dual GbE ports, a PS/2 jack, and audio jacks. Three DisplayPorts and a VGA port support triple displays at up to 4K resolution. A PCIe x16 expansion slot and an ATX power supply are also available

The thin (1U) Mini-ITX EMB-Q170B has an M2 connector, plus double the SATA 6Gbps ports (four) of the EMB-Q170A. It also adds mSATA, LVDS, and eDP ports, which are missing on the EMB-Q170A. Otherwise, it’s slightly scaled down in terms of real-world coastline ports. Like the EMB-Q170A, the EMB-Q170B offers four coastline USB 3.0 ports, dual GbE ports, and triple display support at up to 4K. However, there are no coastline USB 2.0 ports, and only two DisplayPorts, and no PS/2 or ATX. A PCIe x1 slot is also available.

This lower-cost thin-height (1U) EMB-H110B is limited to dual display support (DP, HDMI, eDP, and LVDS) and 2K resolution. Like its siblings, it offers four USB 3.0 ports, dual GbE ports, and audio I/O. It offers dual SATA 6Gbps slots, PCIe x1, and audio I/O. The press release notes the presence of M2 connectors, but these are not shown on the product pages, datasheet, or block and detail images.
