Industrial touch-panel runs Linux or Android on i.MX6

Sep 30, 2015 — by Eric Brown 2,050 views

Industrial Shields has launched a rugged 10.1-inch “HummTouch” touch-panel system that runs Linux or Android on an i.MX6 DualLite-based HummingBoard SBC.

Barcelona-based Industrial Shields has followed up on its earlier Raspberry Pi-based Touchberry Pi touch-panel PC with a HummTouch system based instead on the SolidRun HummingBoard Carrier Pro, which was previously announced as the HummingBoard Pro. Like other HummingBoards, including the new HummingBoard-Gate, the Pro runs Linux or Android on a Cortex-A9-based Freescale i.MX6 SoC.

The separately sold HummTouch Linux and HummTouch Android models appear to be identical except for the distributions pre-loaded onto their SD cards. They’re also very similar to the Touchberry Pi, which at 370 Euros is only 35 Euros less than the HummTouch. The systems have the same 10.1-inch, 1366 x 768-pixel screens with 170° viewing angles, the same 24VDC power supply, and by the looks of it, the same housing.

I/O is almost identical to the TouchBerry Pi, with the main difference being the addition of a MIPI CSI camera connector on the HummTouch. Common features include 10/100 Ethernet, dual USB 2.0 ports, 8x GPIO, and other interfaces like I2C. Since the TouchBerry Pi used the Raspberry Pi Model B+, the HummTouch is faster, with a dual-core, 800MHz DualLite SoC instead of a 700MHz ARM11 SoC, and it has twice the RAM (1GB).

The TouchBerry Pi and HummTouch touch-panel systems are meant to be used in conjunction with the company’s Arduino-controlled Ardbox and M-Duino PLC modules, communicating via USB, I2C, and Ethernet, as illustrated below.

I/O functions provided by the PLC modules include relays, digital I/O, analog I/O, and PWM. The Ardbox models have internal Arduino Leonardo SBCs, while the M-Duino modules contain Arduino MEGAs.
