ESP32-S3-Based WiCAN Pro: An OBD Scanner for Vehicle Diagnostics and Home Assistant Integration

Aug 15, 2024 — by Giorgio Mendoza 662 views

Crowd Supply recently featured the WiCAN Pro, a diagnostic OBD scanner designed to support advanced automotive diagnostics. Built on the ESP32-S3 platform, it offers compatibility with all legislated OBD-II protocols, allowing it to interface with multiple CAN BUS protocols, including three standard CAN protocols and one Single Wire CAN.

WiCAN Pro operates using the open-source WiCAN firmware, supported by a dedicated OBD interpreter chip. This setup allows integration with additional peripherals such as LTE modems, GPS modules, or the ESPNetLink LTE/GPS module. These features extend its functionality beyond standard diagnostics, enabling real-time location tracking and online data analysis.

WiCAN Pro supports a variety of OBD-II protocols compared to its predecessor, the WiCAN, including: ISO 15765-4 CAN, SAE J1939 CAN, ISO 11898 raw CAN, Single Wire CAN (GMLAN), SAE J1850-PWM, and ISO 14230-4.

The device includes dual UARTs, one dedicated to flashing and debugging the ESP32-S3 and the other configurable for sending commands to the OBD chip, providing flexibility for developers working on custom automotive applications. Other features include:

  • Supports all OBD-II protocols with a dedicated chip
  • Compatible with ELM327, ELM329, STN, and VT instruction sets
  • RTC for accurate timekeeping
  • USB-C connector for flashing ESP32 (note: the device cannot be powered via USB-C)
  • microSD card logging
  • USB host for optional peripherals such as LTE or GPS

According to the product page, WiCAN Pro can be integrated with Home Assistant and other IoT applications without requiring external apps. This feature enables users to incorporate vehicle data into a smart home ecosystem, allowing for automated vehicle diagnostics and monitoring.
