ESP32-H2 Thread/Zigbee Gateway Module for Low-Power Wireless Communication

Feb 8, 2025 — by Giorgio Mendoza 346 views

The ESP32-H2 Thread/Zigbee Gateway Module is a stackable development module designed for the M5 series hosts. It is based on the ESP32-H2-MINI-1 and supports Zigbee, Thread, and Matter. The module includes IEEE 802.15.4 wireless connectivity, making it capable of building Matter over Thread endpoint devices and supporting communication between different ecosystems.

The module features a 32-bit single-core RISC-V MCU with a clock speed of up to 96 MHz. It includes 2MB of flash storage and an onboard PCB antenna for wireless communication. This ESP32 module also includes an integrated hardware encryption engine that ensures secure data transmission, useful for IoT applications requiring encrypted communication.

There is a built-in 8-position DIP switch allows users to configure the interface mode, enabling selection between UART and SPI communication. Its low power consumption includes a standby current of 8.55mA at 3.3V and a working current of 18.35mA at 3.3V during Thread networking.

The product page indicates that the module is designed for multi-module stacking, allowing integration with other devices in smart home automation, industrial control, sensor networks, and environmental monitoring.

It supports UIFlow 2.0 and the Arduino IDE, like most M5Stack products, but according to the Wiki pages, this device appears to require the ESP32 Downloader to program the ESP32-H2.
