EchoEar Development Kit Targets Voice Interaction and Edge AI Applications

Sep 21, 2025 — by Giorgio Mendoza 726 views

EchoEar is a compact AI development kit for voice interaction and edge AI applications. It targets use cases such as smart toys, voice-enabled speakers, and control systems. The device features a circular touch display, dual microphones with local wake-word detection and sound localization, and supports large model integration from OpenAI, Xiaozhi AI, and Gemini.

The development kit integrates the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N16R16V module from Espressif, which includes dual-core Xtensa LX7 processors, 16MB of Flash, and 16MB of PSRAM. Connectivity is provided through 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5 (LE), supporting both local and cloud-based operation.

For storage, EchoEar includes onboard Flash and PSRAM along with a microSD card slot that supports up to 32GB, allowing it to handle multimedia data such as audio logs, interaction history, or visual content. The device also integrates a 1.85-inch circular QSPI touch screen with 360 × 360 resolution, providing an interface for multimodal applications.

The audio system is built around a 3W speaker and a dual microphone array based on the LMA3729T381-OY3S, supporting offline wake-word recognition and sound localization. Supporting components include an NS4150B Class-D amplifier, ES7210 audio decoder, and ES8311 audio codec, which handle playback and recording functions. Additional onboard hardware includes a BMI270 IMU for motion sensing and a green LED indicator for status feedback.

Power management relies on a BQ27220 battery management chip and a TP4057 charging IC, enabling operation with a 3.7V lithium battery. Additional features include USB-C input, a magnetic connector interface for docking and expansion, direct battery power support, and accessible power, boot, and reset controls on the back.

On the software side, EchoEar is supported by the esp-brookesia project along with Espressif’s ESP-IDF environment. Developers can flash applications via the USB-C port and leverage available Board Support Packages to integrate peripherals such as displays, audio, and touch inputs.

Further Information

According to a distributor listing on Mouser, EchoEar is priced at $39.61 per unit, though it is currently on backorder with new stock expected by late October 2025.
