DietPi May 2025 Update Introduces Security Changes, Kernel Fixes, and Software Cleanups

May 26, 2025 — by Giorgio Mendoza 138 views

The latest DietPi release (v9.13) focuses on improving security defaults, enhancing support for specific SBCs, and removing outdated software options. The update also brings kernel upgrades, interface refinements, and dozens of bug fixes for improved stability across platforms.

DietPi:

DietPi is a lightweight, Debian-based operating system optimized for single-board computers and embedded systems. It emphasizes minimal resource usage, offering users a streamlined environment with configurable automation tools and software installations.

May Updates for DietPi v9.13:

DietPi v9.13 now enforces a password change for default users and software installations. If a device or application is still using the default credentials, users will be prompted during the update process to change them. This is skipped if a custom password is already set in the dietpi.txt configuration.

Google AIY and Mycroft AI have been removed from DietPi-Software. The AIY repositories are no longer maintained, and Mycroft AI has officially shut down. Users can manually uninstall existing instances or explore alternatives like OpenVoiceOS and Neon AI.

Enhancements:

To reduce the base image size, DietPi images no longer include unzip, 7zip, or bzip2 by default. These will now be installed automatically only when needed.

Hardware-specific improvements include the following:

  • Orange Pi 3B now supports the PWM fan connector in mainline kernel builds.
  • Radxa Zero 3 updates to a Linux 6.1 vendor kernel, enabling HDMI audio.
  • ASUS Tinker Board 2 resolves Ethernet MAC address inconsistencies on boot when using the new 6.12 kernel.
  • Virtual machine images now use initramfs-tools instead of tiny-initramfs to avoid boot failures, particularly when using Clonezilla or Proxmox.

Tool Refinements and RISC-V Support:

The first-run setup process features a simplified keyboard layout selection screen. This update reduces the number of steps needed for configuration while still allowing access to advanced settings if necessary.

Gitea is now available for RISC-V systems, aligning with support introduced in upstream releases.

Bug Fixes Across Tools and Hardware:

This version addresses several regressions and stability issues:

  • Orange Pi 3B v1.1 now boots with Ethernet when using the vendor bootloader.
  • Orange Pi Zero 3 and 2W no longer incorrectly detect RAM size, fixing related system crashes.
  • DietPi-Set_CPU fixes an issue where CPU frequency scaling was incorrectly configured on rare systems.
  • DietPi-Imager now properly resizes partitions on Debian Bullseye and similar hosts.
  • DietPi-Display ensures disabled displays can be re-enabled after a reboot and resolves duplicate kernel arguments when adjusting the same display multiple times.
  • Software-specific fixes include:
    • RPi.GPIO no longer attempts installation on unsupported Bullseye systems.
    • Fish shell now uninstalls cleanly and warns users still using it as a login shell.
    • Home Assistant installation is fixed for Python 3.13.2 compatibility.
    • Redis now starts without memory overcommit warnings.
    • A visual glitch in the “Browse software” menu has been resolved by switching to 1-byte ASCII dashes for layout.
