Development board with triple DP++ ports runs on Ryzen R1000

Apr 25, 2019 — by Eric Brown 2,318 views

Sapphire has launched an “AMD FS-FP5R 5×5” SBC with an AMD Ryzen Embedded R1000 SoC plus 2x GbE, 3x DP++, USB 3.1, SATA III, and M.2 expansion. Sapphire also sells two Ryzen V1000 based SBCs.

Hong Kong based Sapphire Embedded Solutions is primarily known for its gaming and graphics cards, but it also has an embedded product line that runs on AMD embedded processors like the G-series and R-series. Now, the company has launched an AMD FS-FP5R 5×5 SBC with AMD’s new R-series successor, the Ryzen Embedded R1000. No OS details were listed, but Linux and Windows 10 are supported on two Sapphire SBCs built around the more powerful Ryzen Embedded V1000: the AMD FS-FP5V and more recent, Mini-ITX form factor AMD IPC-FP5V 10GbE (see farther below).

At 147.3 x 139.8mm, the new AMD FS-FP5R 5×5 is smaller than ASRock’s 4×4 NUC-R1000, a Linux-friendly, Ryzen R1000-based embedded board that also drives its iBox-R1000 industrial computer. Like the V1000-based FS-FP5V board it’s closely based on, the FS-FP5R has stacked ports that may make it a tight fit in constrained spaces. Equipped with a wide-range power supply and a slightly extended 0 to 50°C temperature range, the system is designed for light embedded duty such as electronic gaming machines, medical imaging, interactive digital signage, thin clients, POS terminals.

The AMD FS-FP5R 5×5 offers a choice of either dual-core, quad-thread R1000 models, each of which has triple Vega graphics cores. Like the other R1000 based products that have been revealed, including an upcoming Ibase IB918 3.5-inch SBC, the board supports 32GB DDR4 via dual channels.

For storage, there’s a SATA III port and M.2 M-Key slot that supports SATA. There’s also an M.2 E-Key that you can use for wireless and other add-ons. The trio of DP++ ports can each drive 4K displays simultaneously.

The AMD FS-FP5R 5×5 exploits the R1000’s support for USB 3.1, offering a USB 3.1 Type-C port and 3x USB 2.0 ports. Other features include 2x GbE ports, audio jacks, a serial header, GPIO, a watchdog, and TPM 2.0. The board ships with an “active APU” cooler.

Specifications listed for the AMD FS-FP5R 5×5 include:

  • Processor — AMD Ryzen Embedded R1000 (2x cores, 4x thread Zen cores plus 3x core Radeon Vega 3 graphics); choice of 2.4GHz/3.3GHz R1505G and 2.6GHz/3.5GHz R1606G; Fintek F81803 I/O chipset
  • Memory — Up to 32GB dual-channel up to DDR4-2400, including ECC
  • Storage:
    • SATA III port

Sapphire launched its AMD FS-FP5V SBC last July. It has more recently followed up with a larger Mini-ITX board called the AMD IPC-FP5V 10GbE that is similarly built around the Ryzen Embedded V1000. The V1000 has up to 4x dual-threaded Zen cores and a Vega GPU with up to 11 compute units.

The AMD FS-FP5V is almost identical to the R1000-based AMD FS-FP5R except for its more powerful processor and the addition of a fourth DP++ port. Otherwise, the footprint and specs appear to be the same.

The newer AMD IPC-FP5V 10GbE is notable for its 2x 10GbE ports — you can also opt for standard GbE ports. Like the FS-FP5V, this larger, 170 x 170mm board features 4x DP++ ports for 4x simultaneous 4K displays, and one of them can be swapped out for an eDP interface. It also switches one of the three USB 2.0 ports to 3.1, giving you 2x USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports.

Like the other two boards, the AMD IPC-FP5V 10GbE supports 32GB DDR4 and offers SATA III and M.2 M-Key and E-Key slots. Other features, including the 0 to 50°C range, are also similar. Like the FS-FP5V, there’s support for Linux and Windows 10.
