CompuLab debuts an x86-based COM Express trio

[Updated: June 16] — CompuLab’s three Linux-friendly x86 COM Express modules include a Type 6 COM with 5th Gen Core CPUs and Type 10 COMs with Atom E3800 and AMD G-Series SoCs.

CompuLab is known primarily for its mini-PCs, but it has also introduced a number of ARM computer-on-modules in recent years, including the SODIMM-style, Snapdragon 600 based CM-QS600. The new COMEX modules are the Israeli vendor’s first x86-based COM releases in quite a while, as well as its first COM Express modules. This trio of x86 COM Express modules replaces a family of “mature” modules based on Intel’s and AMD’s older embedded-oriented SoCs, evidence of which appears on a page of CompuLab’s website tagged x86-legacy.


The COMEX modules are as follows:


  • COMEX-IC50L — 5th Generation Intel Core (“Broadwell”) ULT, COM Express Compact Type 6
  • COMEX-IE38 — Intel Atom E3800 and Celeron (“BayTrail”), COM Express Mini Type 10
  • COMEX-A420 — AMD Embedded G-Series and E-Series, COM Express Mini Type 10

There is not a lot new here compared to the many other COMs that have run the same processors, but then again, you don’t normally find many innovations on COM Express beyond the innovations enabled by the processors themselves. The COMEX modules are relatively high-end, however, with extensive I/O, wide-range power supplies (except for the Core-based model), and commercial (0 to 70°C), extended (-20 to 70°C), and industrial (-40 to 85°) temperature ranges. Shock (50G/20ms) and vibration (20G/0-600Hz) resistance is also available.

The display interfaces are state of the art, with each module providing at least one DDI interface that lets you choose from HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort (DP), and DP++ flavors, as well as eDP (Embedded DisplayPort). All but the G-Series-based COMEX-A420 let you swap out eDP for LVDS, but at extra cost.

The COMEX products are provided with comprehensive documentation and full support for Linux and Windows, says CompuLab. The Type 6 COMEX-IC50L is further supported with a new SB-COMEX-T6 carrier board, while the Atom-based, Type 10 COMEX-IE38 is available with a SB-COMEXmini carrier, and the G-Series Type 10 COMEX-A420 module uses a SB-COMEX-T10 board. The carrier boards all provide debugging features, and provide optional mini-PCIe based WiFi modules with dual antennas, as well as passive heatsinks and a variety of cables.


The COMEX-IC50L is designed for networking, communications, industrial automation, and IoT applications, as well as multimedia applications like digital signage, Point of Sale, and surveillance, says CompuLab. You get a choice of three dual-core 5th Gen Intel Core processors with 15W TDPs and Intel HD Graphics 5500 or 6000. The options include the 2.2GHz Core i7-5650U, the 1.8GHz Core i5-5350U, and the 2.1GHz i3-5010U. Up to 16GB of DDR3L-1600 RAM can be loaded via dual SODIMM slots.

The 95 x 95mm COM Express Type 6 module provides dual DDI ports, as well as an EDP 1.3 port, each of which supports up-to 3200 x 2000-pixel resolution. Optionally, the eDP can be replaced with a dual-channel LVDS interface that can deliver up to 1920 x 1200 pixels, and one of the DDI interfaces can be replaced with a VGA port at the same resolution. Unlike the other two modules, simultaneous triple displays are supported, compared to dual display.

The COMEX-IC50L provides four SATA 6Gbps ports, an Intel I218 gigabit Ethernet controller, HD Audio, four USB 3.0 ports, and eight USB 2.0 ports. There are also a generous six PCIe x1 interfaces, as well as dual UARTS, LPC, I2C, SMBus, fan control, and eight GPIOs.

Other features include a watchdog, RTC, optional TPM, and ACPI 5.0 compliant power management. You get a standard 12V power supply, as well as the aforementioned wide temperature ranges and shock and vibration resistance.

The optional SB-COMEX-T6 carrier is a spacious, 305 x 244mm ATX board with an extensive feature set, including ports for all the display ports as well as SATA, optional mSATA, and a microSD slot. You also get Realtek ALC886 audio with numerous analog and digital audio jacks, six USB ports, including dual 3.0 ports, an ultra-mini RS232 port, and a CAN port on an RJ45 connector, among other I/O.

The SB-COMEX-T6 carrier provides dual mini-PCIe slots, along with PCIe x16, PCIe x4, and PCIe x1 connections. Temperature and ruggedization features are also carried through here.


The COMEX-IE38 is a COM Express Mini (84 x 55mm) COM based on the 22nm Bay Trail-based Atom E3800 and Celeron system-on-chips with Intel Gen 7 graphics. Choices include the quad-core, 1.91GHz Atom E3845 and 2GHz Celeron J1900, each with 10W TDPs, or the dual-core, 1.58GHz Celeron N2807 (4.3W TDP). You can also opt for a single-core, 1.46GHz Atom E3815 with a 5W TDP.

Regardless of CPU type, the module supports up to 8GB of soldered DDR3L-1333 RAM and 8GB to 64GB of high-speed, on board SSD MLC storage. You get also dual SATA 3Gbps interfaces, but one of those is designated for the SSD drive. Dual displays are available with the DDI and either eDP or optional single-channel LVDS, with all but LVDS interface supporting up to 2560 x 1600 pixels.

The Atom-based COMEX-IE38 provides an optional gigabit Ethernet controller (Intel I211), an HD audio interface, and seven USB ports, one of which is a USB 3.0 connection. For expansion, you get four PCIe x1 interfaces.

Other I/O includes UART, SDIO, LPC, I2C, SMBus, fan control, and eight GPIOs. A watchdog, RTC, and ACPI 5.0 power management is also provided. There’s a wide-range 4.7V to 20V power supply, as well as the aforementioned temperature ranges and ruggedization features.

The COMEX-IE38 is available with a SB-COMEXmini carrier board designed for Type 6 COMs. The 140 x 93mm board has an HDMI port and either a DisplayPort or single-channel LVDS interface. Storage features include a microSD slot, as well as a SATA port and a mini-PCIe-based mSATA ports.

Despite the small size, the SB-COMEXmini carrier provides dual gigabit Ethernet ports compared to only one on the other two carrier boards. Half- and full-size mini-PCIe slots are available, as well four USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, a mini-RS232 port, and five GPIOs, among other features.

Audio jacks are supplied for the Realtek ALC888 codec, as well as SPDIF output. The 6.5V to 20V board can operate at up to industrial temperatures and has the aforementioned ruggedization support.


The COMEX-A420 is very similar to the Atom-based COMEX-IE38, due to having the same, 84 x 55mm Type 6 Mini profile and very similar, quad-core embedded SoC, in this case the AMD G-Series SoC. Specifically, the module is available with a 1.2GHz GX-412HC with 7W TDP. The default, however, is the E1 Micro 6200T from AMD’s E-Series family. This tablet-focused, dual-core, 1GHz processor has a low 3.95W TDP.

According to CompuLab, “low cost and superior graphics capabilities” provided by the AMD Radeon HD8000 (G-Series) or Radeon R2 (E-Series) make the COMEX-A420 “an excellent solution for multimedia demanding applications.” Display options and resolution are the same as with the COMEX-IE38, except there’s no LVDS option or DP++ support.

Like the COMEX-IE38, the AMD-based COMEX-A420 supports up to 8GB of soldered DDR3L-1333 RAM. There are also dual SATA interfaces, which run at a faster 6Gbps, but there’s no onboard SSD option. While the Atom-based COM supports only eight USB ports, the COMEX-A420 gives you 10, and two of them are USB 3.0. The four PCIe interfaces and other I/O and ancillary features are identical, except that you get dual UARTs here instead of one, and there’s no SDIO.

The COMEX-A420 similarly supports a 4.7V to 20V input range, and has the same 84 x 55mm footprint and 35-gram weight. It shares the same temperature ranges and ruggedization features as the other modules.

Like the SB-COMEX-T6 carrier for the for the Core-based module, the COMEX-A420’s SB-COMEX-T10 is a 305 x 244mm ATX board. In this case, however, it’s optimized for Type 10 COMs. The feature set is more similar to that of the Atom-based COMEX-IE38 module’s SB-COMEXmini carrier. USB, PCIe, mini-PCIe, serial, CAN, and GPIO offerings are all identical to the mini board, and audio is the same except you get SPDIF in, as well as out.

Displays are handled a bit differently than with the SB-COMEXmini, with a choice between HDMI and DisplayPort, as well as a choice between single-channel LVDS and eDP. Storage features also differ. You once again get a microSD slot, but you can choose between dual SATA ports or one SATA port and a standard mSATA port. As noted, there’s a single gigabit Ethernet port. The board has a 8.5V to 12V power supply, and the usual industrial temperature and ruggedization features.

All the prices are for 1,000 units or more, but other pricing is also listed. The base price does not include OS preloading, extended temperature support, or other features as listed below.
