Compact Skylake and Braswell COMs share a carrier board

Aug 2, 2016 — by Eric Brown 399 views

DFI is sampling two Linux-friendly COM Express Compact Type 6 modules that use the same carrier: a 6th Gen Core based “SU968” and an Intel Braswell “BW968.”

DFI has brought its line of 95 x 95mm COM Express Compact modules up to date with new Intel Skylake and Braswell models. Both the 6th Generation Core based SU968 and the Intel Celeron and Pentium N3000 ready BW968 support several Linux and Windows distributions, and can use the same COM332-B carrier board.

The available Debian 8 and CentOS 7 Linux distributions include VESA graphics drivers, while the Ubuntu 15.10 option has an Intel graphics driver. Linux support is not mentioned on the BW968 product page, but is listed in the datasheet.

Both products have triple display support, and can individually support up to 4096 x 2160 (SU968) or 3840 x (BW968). They both have 12V/5VSB power supplies and support 0 to 60°C temperatures. In addition, the SU968 is said to support -40 to 85°C with an optional heat spreader.

SU968 Skylake module

The SU968 supports dual-core, Skylake U-Series processors with 15W TDPs. These include the 2.6GHz Core i7-6600U, 2.4GHz Core i5-6300U, and 2.3GHz Core i3-6100U. All the CPUs also support higher Turbo clock rates. In addition, the board supports a 15W, dual-core, 2.0GHz Celeron 3955U without Turbo.

The module supports up to 16GB of dual-channel DDR3L-1600MHz RAM instead of the faster DDR4 RAM we have come to expect from Skylake products. Display support includes DDI, VGA/DDI, and dual-channel, 24-bit LVDS, which can be swapped out for eDP.

A GbE port is provided along with either 5x PCIe x1 or else 4x PCIe x1 combined with a PCIe x4 interface. The number of SATA 3.0 ports depend on the processor. The Core i7 and i5 models have three, and include RAID 0/1/5/10 support, while the Celeron is limited to two. There’s no mention of the i3.

The SU968 supports 4x USB 3.0 and 8x USB 2.0 ports, as well as HD audio, LPC, I2C, SMBus, and dual UART interfaces. Other features include 8-bit DIO, watchdog, and optional TPM. Power consumption with the Core i7 is a typical 10.28W, or 16.46W maximum, says DFI.

BW968 Braswell module

The BW968 supports Intel Braswell chips including the top-of-the-line, quad-core Pentium N3710, the quad-core Celeron N3060 and N3160, and the dual-core Celeron N3010. You can also choose an Atom x5-E8000. They all have 6W TDPs except for the Celeron 3010, which runs at even lower 4W and the Atom, which has a 5W TDP.

You can load up to 8GB of DDR3L-1600 RAM via dual SODIMMs, and you get 3 x PCIe x1 Gen 2 and 2x SATA 3.0 interfaces. Display interfaces are the same as with the SU968 except that the DDI support is optional on the VGA port.

The BW968’s GbE and USB support is also the same as the SU968, as are the other interfaces and features. Power consumption with the Pentium N3710 is said to be 3.41W typical, with a maximum of 7.35W.

COM332-B carrier

Both COM Express Compact modules are available with the 244 x 244mm microATX form-factor COM332-B carrier board. Coastline ports include a GbE port, 3x DisplayPorts, 4x USB 3.0 ports, 4x USB 2.0 ports, and 3x audio jacks (Realtek ALC888S-VD2-GR codec). VGA, LVDS, and eDP connectors are also onboard along with S/PDIF audio.

The COM332-B carrier provides four SATA 3.0 ports, plus serial, 8-bit DIO, LPC, SMBus, a fan connector, and SDIO interfaces. PCIe expansion includes a PCIe x16, 6x PCIe x1 interfaces and dual full-size mini-PCIe slots. The board has 12V and ATX power supplies and supports Type 6 Basic modules as well as Compact.
