Box computer and Pico-ITX SBC pack i.MX6
Jul 10, 2015 — by Eric Brown 1,565 viewsAdvantech launched a Pico-ITX SBC and a computer that run Linux or Android on a dual-core i.MX6, and offer 4GB eMMC, dual displays, and two mini-PCIe slots.
Advantech unveiled both a 2.5-inch Pico-ITX board called the RSB-3410 and a box computer version called the UBC-220. The name, design, and distinctive blue coloring of the UBC-220 are similar to that of the recently revealed Intel Quark based UBC-221, but the limitations of the Quark compared to the multi-faceted 1GHz, Cortex-A9-based Freescale i.MX6 SoC on the UBC-221’s RSB-3410 mainboard make these very different computers.

Both systems can act as IoT gateways, but the UBC-220 is a more general purpose computer available for environments such as “smart buildings, parking lots, and public spaces,” according to Advantech. The dual display support also enables simple signage applications, says the company.

Like the UBC-221, the UBC-220 and RSB-3410 run Yocto Linux, but only as an optional “design-in” service. A more standard “embedded Linux” BSP, which similarly ships with complete toolchain and source code, ships as the default, and an Android 4.2.2 image and BSP source code are also available.
Both the 100 x 72 x 21mm RSB-3410 Pico-ITX board and 142 x 101 x 30mm UBC-220 box ship with a dual-core DualLite version of the i.MX6, which has a slightly lesser powered Vivante GPU compared to the Dual. A single-core Solo is also listed as an option on the UBC-220. Specs for both systems are listed as preliminary, although they’re expected to ship this month.

The RSB-3410 offers a choice of 512MB of 1GB of DDR3-1066 RAM, while the UBC-220 ships only with 1GB. Otherwise, the specs are identical, so we’ll hereafter refer to the device as the UBC-220.

The UBC-220 ships with 4GB of eMMC flash, as well as an SD slot. The system provides dual mini-PCIe slots, as well as a SIM slot and antenna for wireless options including WiFi, 3G, and GPS.

External I/O includes a GbE port, a 1080p HDMI port, a RS-232 port, and USB 2.0 host and micro-USB OTG ports. Other features include a single-channel LVDS interface, which can run simultaneously with the HDMI port.

The UBC-220 supports 0 to 40°C temperatures (0 to 60°C for the RSB-3410 SBC), and runs at 3W (max load) on a 12V power supply. Mounting methods include VESA, DIN rail, and flexible wall mounting. With Advantech’s special VESA bracket, the UBC-220 can be integrated with Advantech openframe monitors “to provide a fanless standalone system with rich I/O capabilities that supports device management for complex IoT infrastructures,” says the company.
