Adafruit CLUE: A Sensor-Packed nRF52840 Development Board in a micro:bit Form Factor

Jan 30, 2025 — by Giorgio Mendoza 301 views

The Adafruit CLUE is a development board with a built-in display, multiple sensors, and Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity. It follows the form factor of the BBC micro:bit while incorporating additional processing power and expanded functionality. The board is designed for applications involving data visualization, sensor-based measurements, and wireless communication.

This device is powered by the Nordic nRF52840, a Bluetooth LE processor with a 64 MHz Cortex M4 CPU, 1 MB of Flash, and 256 KB of RAM. This processor supports real-time applications with a low-power design and integrated wireless capabilities. It allows the board to process sensor data and transmit information over Bluetooth to external devices.

Adafruit notes that the accelerometer and gyroscope have been updated from the LSM6DS33 to the LSM6DS3TR. The board also includes an LIS3MDL magnetometer, an APDS9960 sensor for proximity, light, color, and gesture detection, an SHT humidity sensor, and a BMP280 for temperature and barometric pressure measurements. A PDM microphone enables sound input, while an RGB NeoPixel LED provides visual feedback.

Two white LEDs are available for illumination and color sensing. The board has 2 MB of flash storage for data logging, image storage, and CircuitPython scripts. It operates on a 3-6V power source with an internal regulator. Available hardware interfaces include SPI, UART, I2C, and I2S, with a Qwiic/STEMMA QT connector for expanding functionality with additional sensors and accessories.

The CLUE supports programming through the Arduino IDE and CircuitPython, offering different development options. MakeCode and Scratch are not currently supported. The board is intended for real-time data collection and processing, enabling users to log and visualize sensor data directly on the display or transmit it wirelessly.

While the CLUE shares the micro:bit’s physical outline, most cases are incompatible due to hardware differences. The Adafruit CLUE libraries detect the updated sensor automatically, but some existing code may require modifications.
