15-inch touch-panel PC runs on Skylake or Bay Trail

May 14, 2018 — by Eric Brown 357 views

EVOC’s “PPC-1561” is a 15.6-inch, HD-ready, capacitive touch-panel computer with a 7th Gen “Skylake-U” or Bay Trail Celeron CPU, IP65 protection, SATA, mini-PCIe, and up to 4x GbE, 6x COM, and 6x USB ports.

The fanless PPC-1561 from Chinese embedded vendor EVOC is a 15.6-inch capacitive touch-panel PC with a choice of Intel CPU platforms. The default is an up to 2.4Ghz Intel Core i5-6300U or an up to 2.3GHz Core I3-6100U dual-core processor from the 7th Gen “Skylake” family, and you can also choose a quad-core, Intel “Bay Trail” Celeron J1900 SoC at up to 2.0GHz. The Skylake and Bay Trail versions appear to be the same except that the default 4GB of RAM can be expanded to 20GB on the Core models versus 8GB on the Celeron version.

No OS support was listed, but a product page has yet to be posted. EVOC already offers a 15-inch, resistive “PPC-1561V” touch-panel PC that runs both Linux and Windows on an Intel Bay Trail or Atom D525 CPU (see farther below).

The 15.6-inch, 1920 x 1080 touchscreen offer 300 nits brightness and a 700:1 contrast ratio. The screen is said to use capacitive touch technology, but two SKUs listed on the bottom offer resistive touch.

The high-strength aluminum alloy chassis is a sealed design that is protected against ingress per IP65. Hidden touch keys are available on the edge of the screen on the front panel.

The PPC-1561 spec list shows dual GbE ports, as well up to 6x USB ports and up to 4x RS232/485/422 ports. There appears to be a high degree of modularity and customization here, however, as the image farther above shows 4x Ethernet ports, 4x USB ports, and 2x COM ports.

There’s an externally accessible SATA bay for an SSD or an up to 500GB HDD, as well as a mini-PCIe slot that supports mSATA or wireless. HDMI, VGA, and PS/2 KB ports are also available. The photos also indicate some features missing from the spec list, including a terminal block with GPIO, dual audio jacks, a pair of antenna mounts, a reset button, and LEDs.

The system supports 0 to 40°C temperatures, and runs on a 24VDC (19-30V) input via a 4-pin terminal block interface. There’s an optional AC 220V adapter, as well as anti-reverse, over-current, and over-voltage protections. Panel- and VESA arm mounting are available.

The PPC-1561 follows an earlier, 15-inch, 1024 x 768-pixel PPC-1561V touch-panel PC with a choice of a Celeron J1900 or an old-school dual-core, 1.8GHz Atom D525. As noted above, Linux and Windows support is available.

The 5-wire resistive touchscreen is protected per IP65 and offers high brightness at 420 nits and a 700:1 contrast ratio. The VESA-mountable, 400 x 300 x 80mm system operates at -20 to 55°C with CFast or SSD storage or 0 to 40°C with an HDD. The 24VDC (19-30V) input supports remote power-on/off.

Four models are available, each with a choice of Celeron or Atom, and pre-loaded with a 500GB HDD. Common features include an accessible 2.5-inch SATA bay, a CFast slot, 2x GbE ports, and VGA and PS/2 ports. For expansion, you get 2x PCI slots, 2x mini-PCI slots, and a SIM card slot. All four models let you choose between an audio jack, Parallel port, or 8-bit GPIO.

The four PPC-1561V models differ as follows:

  • 0010-057031 — 2GB DDR3, 6x COM, 5x USB
  • 0010-057041 — 2GB DDR3, 2x COM, 2x USB
  • 0010-078121 — 4GB DDR3, 6x COM, 5x USB
  • 0010-083481 — 4GB DDR3, 6x COM, 5x USB, WiFi

Further information

No pricing or availability was provided for the new PPC-1561, although the earlier PPC-1561V is certainly available. More information may be found in EVOC’s PPC-1561 announcement.
