Vision controller offers PoE-based IP camera support and real-time vision I/O

Apr 24, 2019 — by Eric Brown — 682 views

Axiomtek’s rugged “IPS960-511-PoE” vision controller runs on 6th or 7th Gen Core CPUs with 4x PoE-ready GbE and 4x USB 3.0 ports for IP cameras plus vision I/O including a trigger input, DIDO, and a lighting controller.

Axiomtek announced a “vision controller” for machine vision and automatic inspection applications. No OS support was listed for the IPS960-511-PoE, which has an Intel H110 chipset and supports up to 3.4GHz Intel 6th Gen “Skylake” and 7th Gen “Kaby Lake” Core CPUs.

The 230 x 192 x 188.1mm system supports up to 32GB DDR4-2133/2400 via dual slots and has 2x 2.5-inch swappable SATA bays. IP cameras can be connected via 4x IEEE802.3at compliant Power-over-Ethernet GbE ports, as well as 4x USB 3.0 ports. Two standard GbE ports are also available.

There’s a real-time vision I/O port that includes a 4-channel trigger input and 4- or 8-channel trigger output, both with <1us response time. The combo port also offers an 8-channel isolated digital input, 8-channel isolated digital output, auto measurement and programmable interrupt functions, and a quadrature encoder input input for conveyor tracking. It also includes a 4-channel LED lighting controller, which may or may not be the same as the touted "lighting dimming control to identify object characteristics for different inspection."

The IPS960-511-PoE is equipped with HDMI and VGA ports, dual audio jacks, and a mini-PCIe slot with USB support. This appears to be the source of the optional WiFi module with antenna. TPM 2.0 appears to be optional.

An I/O module slot offers a choice of 4x modules: 4x RS-232/422/485 ports, 4x isolated RS-232/422/485 ports, 2x RS-232/422/485 ports with 8-in/8-out isolated DIO, and a combo port with, 2x RS-232/422/485, 2x USB 3.0, and a GbE port.

The IP40-protected, aluminum and steel built IPS960-511-PoE supports -10 to 55°C (Skylake) or -10 to 45°C (Kaby Lake) temperatures and offers humidity resistance and over-voltage/current and short circuit protections. There’s a 24V DC (19-30V) input via a terminal block with ATX/AT, power, reset, and remote switches. Options include a wall-mount bracket, cables, and a power adapter.
