Vizio’s new touchscreen Portable Smart Audio players stream audio and video directly from the Web, from USB drives, and from mobile devices via Bluetooth.

The Portable Smart Audio players come in two models, equipped with either 4.7- or 7.0-inch touchscreen displays, and offer direct access to “millions of streaming songs, audio books, and videos” from the Internet, “without relying on other mobile devices,” says Vizio.

Both devices run Android 4.4 on a quad-core processor, provide Bluetooth and 802.11n WiFi wireless communications, include an unspecified amount of built-in flash memory, provide a USB OTG port for storage expansion, and are powered by “long-lasting” lithium ion batteries.

Features unique to each model are tabulated below.

Display size 4.7 inches 7.0 inches
Length 11 in. 17 in.
Weight 3.6 lbs 8.8 lbs
Bass response 80 Hz 60 Hz
Output level 95 db 101 db

“Through the Google Play Store, you’ll have access to all the popular apps for playing your favorite music, games, movies, TV shows, and more,” adds the company. The devices are said to be GMS Certified, and support virtually all common multimedia formats.

The devices provide direct streaming from the Internet, rather than being tethered to a Bluetooth-enabled or docked tablet or smartphone. A key advantage of this is the absence of interruptions from incoming calls or message notifications, says Vizio.

In addition to playing content through Android apps or from other Internet sources, users can play multimedia files from their smartphone or tablet over Bluetooth, or from files located on the Portable Smart Audio player’s internal flash or in USB-connected media.

“After looking very closely at the audio space, Vizio decided it needed to be disrupted with a combination of our leading audio and smart TV technologies,” stated Vizio CTO Matt McRae. “Our new portable smart audio line-up reinvents the category by combining class-leading audio performance with a full touchscreen Android platform, delivering a first-class device capable of streaming music, playing games, and watching video directly from the cloud or local storage.”

Further information on the Portable Smart Audio players will eventually appear on Vizio’s website and those of its retail channels. For now, various promotional teasers may be found here.
