Rugged Skylake embedded PC has wide range power

Axiomtek’s “eBOX565-500-FL” computer runs Linux or Windows on dual-core Intel 6th Gen CPUs, and offers four USB 3.0 ports and wide-range power.

The eBOX565-500-FL updates the two-year-old eBOX560-880-FL embedded PC, which provides dual-core Intel 4th Gen “Haswell” Core and Celeron CPUs. The very similar eBOX565-500-FL instead taps the 14nm Intel 6th Gen “Skylake” ULT processors, once again offering two dual-core options: the 2.4GHz Core i5-6300U and the 2.0GHz Celeron 3955U.

Aside from the processor, the main difference is the addition of a wide-range, 9 to 36 VDC power supply, which pushes the height up to 141.6 x 106 x 73mm instead of the previous 55mm. Thanks to Skylake, the system also doubles the maximum RAM from 8GB of DDR3L-1600 to 16GB of the speedier DDR4-2133.

The new system offers dual-display support via front and back-mounted HDMI ports instead of HDMI and DisplayPorts on the Haswell model. The temperature range has narrowed slightly to -10 to 50°C when using an SSD, and there’s one less SMA antenna, with three.

Otherwise, the two systems appear to be identical. You get a 2.5-inch SATA bay with optional drives starting at 40GB (HDD) and 4GB (SSD). The fanless system once again offers mSATA and full-length mini-PCIe slots, as well as an optional wireless module.

The eBOX565-500-FL is further configured with four USB 3.0 ports and both RS-232/422/485 and RS-232 ports. The dual GbE ports now offer Jumbo Frame, (9.5K), WoL, PXE, and teaming support, and you also get a reset button, a watchdog, LEDs, and both AT/ATX and ATX switches.

The IP40 protected box is once again hardened against vibrations at up to 3 Grms with SSD. Various mounting options are also available.

Axiomtek also announced an almost identical “eBOX560-500-FL” system that advances to a 6th Gen Core i7-6600U with two 3.4GHz Skylake cores. As this comparison page indicates, the eBOX560-500-FL also differs in that it offers a standard 12VDC power supply, reducing the height to 55mm. Oddly enough, it also offers a slightly wider temperature range, bumping the high end up to 55°C. Unlike the eBOX565-500-FL, no Linux support is listed, but we can’t imagine why it wouldn’t run.

eBOX670-891-FL

Last month we reported on another larger, but more advanced Axiomtek Skylake computer called the eBOX670-891-FL. The rugged, fanless 280 x 190 x 70mm system has a 9-36 VDC supply, IP40, -40 to 55°C support, and vibration resistance. The Linux-ready system has dual SATA bays, and adds CFast storage. It also offers 4x GbE, 6x USB 3.0, and more display and serial ports, among other additions.
