Skylake box-PC targets transportation applications

Sep 16, 2016 — by Eric Brown — 814 views

Adlink’s “MXC-6400” is a rugged fanless transportation focused box-PC with a 6th Gen Core CPU, hot-swappable 2.5-inch SATA bays, and lots of PCIe expansion.

The MXC-6400 is the third rugged industrial computer we’ve seen from Adlink that runs Intel’s 6th Generation Core “Skylake” processors, following the high-end MXE-5500 and the “value” MVP-6000. While those computers have two and one 2.5-inch SATA bays, respectively, the MXC-6400 has four, the better to store large amounts of video for surveillance or passenger information systems.

The MXC-6400 is designed for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for rolling stock, maritime operations, in-vehicle infotainment, and industrial automation, says Adlink. It also supports passenger information and CCTV systems for rail transport and maritime control centers.

The fanless 225 x 200 x 150mm, 4 Kilogram computer can withstand up to 50G shock and 5Grms vibration, as well as temperatures of -20°C to 70°C when using SSDs or CFast storage (0 to 50°C with an HDD). Two of the SATA III bays are hot-swappable, and a removable top cover is said to enable easier maintenance. Adlink also offers optional CFast, HDD, and SSD drives, including drives with RAID 0,1,5,10 support.

Like the MXE-5500, the MXC-6400 supports the same three high-end quad-core EQ and dual-core E series Skylake Core chips, separated into three product SKUs, all of which provide an Intel QM170 chipset:

  • MXC-6401D — Core i7-6820EQ — 4x 2.8GHz (3.5GHz turbo) cores, 8MB L2, 45W TDP
  • MXC-6402D — Core i5-6440EQ — 4x 2.7GHz (3.4GHz turbo) cores, 6MB L2, 45W TDP
  • MXC-6403D — Core i3-6100E — 2x 2.7GHz cores, 3MB L2, 35W TDP

The system is further equipped with 6x USB 3.0 ports, an internal USB 2.0 interface, and a pair each of RS-232/422/485 and RS-232 ports. Audio and PS/2 ports are also available along with a watchdog and optional, isolated 16-channel DIO. Extensive expansion features include dual mini-PCIe slots, and either a PCI with 2x PCIe x8 slots or a PCI with 1x PCIe x16 slot. A uSIM slot is also available.

The MXC-6400 supports Ubuntu 12.04, Fedora 18, Windows 10/7, or WES7, and can load up to 32GB of 2133MHz DDR4. The system offers 3x GbE ports with teaming, WoL, and Intel iAMT 11.0. Dual DisplayPorts and a DVI-I port – all with VGA support — enable simultaneous triple displays.

The MXC-6400 has a wide-range 9-32V power input with optional AC-DC adapter and a remote power on/off switch. A fan module is optional.
