Adlink has released a rugged, Android 4.0 handheld with a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm SoC, 3.8-inch WVGA display, NFC, 3G, and a 5-megapixel barcoding camera.

Adlink’s IMX-3000 handheld computer updates its earlier IMX-2000 model. This in turn is a slightly revised version of its first Android handheld, the circa-2011 TIOT 2000. The IMX-3000 is designed for applications including retail, logistics, on-site inspection, warehousing, and transportation, says Adlink.

Similar features to the IMX-2000 include ruggedization, a 5-megapixel camera with barcode support, Near Field Communication (NFC), and 3G support. However, instead of Android 2.3 running on an 800MHz ARM11 processor, you move up to Android 4.0 running on a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM8225 system-on-chip. The 3.5-inch QVGA resistive touchscreen has been reborn as a 3.8-inch capacitive display with higher WVGA (800 x 480-pixel) resolution and 5-point touch. The screen is also said to offer improved readability in direct sunlight.

You now get 768MB DDR SDRAM and 4GB eMMC Flash instead of 512MB for each. The IMX-3000 is further equipped with WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, and aGPS. The SIM slot supports WCDMA and GSM 3G cellular services including HSDPA and HSUPA.

The NFC radio is protected in a Secure Access Module (SAM) slot that also handles core system cryptography. The NFC support is much improved over the IMX-2000, thanks in large part to Google’s investment in Android NFC technology over the years, says Adlink. The close range communications technology now offers “dramatically enhanced read functions,” as well as built-in apps for different commercial and industrial applications. It also offers synchronously provided “end-user API for secondary software development based on individual requirements,” says the company.

The 5-megapixel camera includes a CCD imager and “high-performance” 1D/2D barcode scanning support. It also offers an input interface for reader utility software that “can easily transfer data to specified locations,” says Adlink. A 2-megapixel CMOS camera is said to be optional.

The IMX-3000 further integrates a USB 2.0 OTG port, an audio jack, a microSD slot, and a variety of sensors. Below the screen are five user buttons, with two more keys on the sides.

The IMX-3000 is IP54 tested for water- and dustproofing, and can survive 1.5 meter drops when enclosed in its protective cover, claims Adlink. The device can operate at temperatures starting at -10 and ranging up to 40°C when using the CCD imager and 50°C when using the 1D/2D scanner, says the company.

A 3.7V 2600mAh battery is standard, or you can move up to a 3.7V 3900mAh model. A charging station appears to be standard.
