Rugged 3.5-inch SBCs run Linux on Bay Trail and Broadwell

Perfectron unveiled a pair of 3.5-inch SBCs: one with a quad-core Atom and the other with Broadwell Core SoCs. Both support extended temperatures.

Perfectron, which recently tapped Intel’s 6th Gen “Skylake” SoCs on its INS8349A Mini-ITX board, has also announced two 3.5-inch form-factor boards with older Intel processors. The OXY5322A is equipped with a quad-core, 1.91GHz Atom E3845 from the 22nm “Bay Trail” generation while the OXY5338A offers a choice of dual-core, 9.5W TDP Core i7-5650U (up to 3.2GHz) and Core i5-5350U (up to 2.90GHz) Broadwell-U CPUs with 14nm fabrication. These same Broadwell processors were supported by Perfectron’s EPIC form-factor OXY5638A SBC from 2015.

On the Atom-based OXY5322A, Linux and Windows support is said to be in process. We imagine this support will end up being similar to that of the Broadwell-based OXY5338A, which supports Ubuntu 13.04, 13.10, and 14.04, plus Fedora 20 and several Windows options.

Both boards measure 146 x 102mm (5.7 x 4.0 inches), which oddly enough is typical of the “3.5-inch” form factor. They both offer wide-range 8 to 32V DC power input, which in recent years has evolved from being something of a rarity on embedded industrial SBCs to a much more commonplace inclusion.

The boards also offer wide temperature support, which is also becoming more typical. The Atom-based OXY5322A can handle a -40 to 85°C industrial range while the OXY5338A offers an extended range of -20 to 70°C. Both boards are said to offer a “high level of resistance to shock and vibration,” although no further details were provided aside from the CPUs being soldered onboard.


The Atom E3845-based OXY5322A is designed for “middle-level demand applications like digital signage, kiosk, POS, and onboard displays,” says Perfectron. The 3.5-inch SBC is said to be ideal for industrial to rugged level fanless systems, as well as heavy-duty vehicle, transportation, and high-end automation.

You can load up to 8GB 1066/1333 MHz DDR3L on the single SODIMM slot. There are two SATA 3Gbps ports plus an mSATA connection co-layed with a half-sized mini-PCIe. There’s also a full-size mini-PCIe slot for wireless and other add-ons.

The coastline VGA and HDMI ports and internal dual-channel, 24-bit LVDS interface support “multiple displays,” says Perfectron. Other coastline ports include dual GbE ports with WOL and PXE boot, as well as a USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 port. A second USB 2.0 interface is onboard, for three total.

A RS232/422/485 port is said to be located on the rear panel, although we don’t see it on the detail view or standard photo. Three RS232 interfaces are available internally. The OXY5322A is further equipped with onboard audio I/O, 8-bit DIO, a PS/2 header, a watchdog, and CPU fan and ATX connectors.


The Broadwell-U based OXY5338A supports applications including high-end automation, energy, transportation, power management and high-end display, says Perfectron. The 3.5-inch board backs up its dual-core Core SoCs with up to 8GB 1600 MHz DDR3L via a single SODIMM.

Only one SATA 3Gbps port is onboard along with an mSATA connection shared with a half-sized mini-PCIe. There’s also a full-size mini-PCIe slot.

Multiple Intel HD Graphics 6000 driven displays are supported via dual coastline HDMI ports capable of 4K resolution, as well as a dual-channel, 24-bit LVDS interface. Other coastline ports include dual GbE ports with WOL and PXE boot, as well as two USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports. Two more USB 2.0 interfaces are onboard for a total of six USB connections.

The OXY5338A is further equipped with one RS232/422/485 and three RS232 interfaces. Other onboard interfaces include audio I/O, 8-bit DIO, a SIM card header, a watchdog, and a CPU fan connector. The board supports Intel vPro virtualization technology.
