MSC’s first Type 7 module features up to 16-core Atom C3000

MSC’s Linux-ready “MSC C7B-DV” COM Express Type 7 module runs on an up to 16-core Atom C3000 with up to 32GB RAM and 64GB eMMC plus up to 22x PCIe lanes and 4x 10GbE controllers.

Avnet-owned MSC announced its first COM Express Type 7 module. The MSC C7B-DV has the typical pairing: a server-class Atom C3000 with Linux (Yocto), as well as Windows 10 IoT Enterprise, Windows Server 2016, and Windows Server 2012 R2 (on request). A carrier board is optional (see farther below).

We’ve seen plenty of Linux-friendly Atom C3000-based Type 7 modules including Adlink’s Express-DN7, DFI’s DV970, Portwell’s PCOM-B701, and Congatec’s Conga-B7AC. The feature sets tend to be similar — and similarly impressive. Like most Type 7 modules, the MSC C7B-DV supports up to a 16-core, 2.0GHz Atom C3958. The module also supports 4, 8-, and 12-core C3000 models.

The 125 x 95 x 17mm module supports up to 32GB of DDR4-2400 or DDR4-2133 RAM, depending on the C3000 variant, with optional ECC. An optional third RAM slot brings you up to the 48GB configurations that are available on many of the rival modules. You can also load up to 64GB eMMC.

The MSC C7B-DV provides up to 4x 10GBASE-KR Ethernet controllers, depending on the SKU, as well as a single GbE controller. The standard configuration offers up to 10x PCIe Gen 3 lanes, and there’s an optional switch that adds 12x PCIe Gen 2 lanes for a total of 22.

Dual SATA III interfaces are available along with 3x USB 3.0, 4x USB 2.0, and 2x high-speed serial. Other features include a watchdog timer, support for an RTC battery, a fan supply header, system monitoring features, and Infineon TPM 2.0 security.

The 12V input is available with an optional 5V standby mode, and power consumption ranges from 20W to 40W. The module is available in 0 to 60°C and -40 to 85°C temperature ranges. Various cooling solutions are optional.

An MSC C7-MB-EV Type 7 carrier board is available for evaluation. The 0 to 85°C tolerant, 305 x 244mm ATX board is equipped with an SD slot, dual SATA III sockets, 4x USB 3.0 ports, and 4x serial headers.

The MSC C7-MB-EV offers 2x standard 10GbE ports, 2x SFP+ 10GbE ports, and a standard GbE port. You also get a PCIe x8 socket and 6x PCIe x4 connections. Other features include LPC/eSPI, 8-bit GPIO, Super I/O, an RTC battery, various reset buttons, and more.

An optional Board Management Controller (BMC) supports out-of-band management. There’s also a starter kit that adds a heatsink with fan, power supply, cable kit, 8GB RAM, and a graphics card.
